SAN ANTONIO – St. Edward's softball opened its series against St. Mary's with two losses in Tuesday's doubleheader.
Game 1: St. Mary's 8, St. Edward's 0
St. Edward's committed five errors in an 8-0 loss to St. Mary's, with all but one of the Rattlers' runs unearned.
The Hilltopper defense opened the inning, getting the leadoff hitter on a groundout, but committed back-to-back errors, with the latter occurring on a sacrifice bunt attempt to put runners in the corners.
Jamison Holder took advantage with an RBI single through the left side. Starting pitcher
KYLEN PADGETT walked the next two hitters to score the second run before inducing a force out at home and striking Gabriela Banda out to end the inning.
Padgett settled in after that, retiring three of four with two strikeouts in the second, another scoreless inning with a strikeout in the third, and stranding two runners in the fourth.
St. Edward's singled in each of the first three innings but could not plate a run.
KATIE DILLON was caught stealing to end the first and lined into an inning-ending double play in the third. The Hilltoppers made good contact on multiple swings but hit directly at outfielders to stall any momentum.
The Hilltoppers cost themselves again in the fifth with back-to-back walks to open the bottom of the inning, followed by an error on an ensuing sacrifice bunt to allow the hitter to reach and score a run. Padgett walked the next two hitters, scoring another run, ending her day.
LISETTE URQUIDEZ entered the pitcher's circle for St. Edward's and surrendered four more runs, ending the game on a walk-off Raegan Tennill two-RBI single down the left-field line.
Game 2: St. Mary's 4, St. Edward's 0
St. Mary's scored three runs in the third inning, and an insurance run in the fourth inning to defeat St. Edward's 4-0 and sweep the doubleheader.
The Rattlers opened the bottom of the third inning with four consecutive hits. Dugi sparked St. Mary's with a leadoff double, Gonzales singled up the middle, and Salinas scored both with a two-RBI double to left-center. After Salinas stole third, Tennill hit an RBI single up the middle for the 3-0 lead.
Gomez opened the sixth with a leadoff single, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, then third on a wild pitch before stealing home.
MEGAN MORRIS and
JERZIE PELHAM were each 2-for-3 for St. Edward's.
ARIANNA VIDALES and
ELLA HUTZLER also had hits. Urquidez went all six innings in the loss. The two teams will conclude the series tomorrow at 5:00 p.m.
