Softball Falls To No. 20 Angelo State

AUSTIN, Texas—St. Edward's softball played No. 20-ranked Angelo State to a near standstill until the Rambelles broke the game open in the final inning and defeated the Hilltoppers 6-0.

KYLEN PADGETT and the Hilltopper defense were solid through the first three innings, keeping Angelo State hitless until Keilei Garcia singled through the left side with one out in the fourth. Padgett walked a hitter in each of the first three innings and struck out a Rambelle in each of the first two innings. After Garcia's hit in the fourth, the defense rallied to turn a 6-3 double play to get out of the inning.

St. Edward's kept its momentum rolling into the fifth with two quick outs until Ashton Dirner drew a walk. Angelo State's shortstop showcased her speed by stealing second and third to set up Averie Gunther's RBI double to left center. With the damage done, Padgett struck out Carter Smith to end the inning.

Zoey De Baca drew a leadoff walk in the seventh, and Layni Tanner followed with a bunt for a single. Dirner moved both into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt, and Gunther drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. Smith followed with an infield single to put runners on the corners, and Angelo State executed a double steal to score its third run.

The inning extended with an error, and Tatiana Trotter and Garcia took advantage with an RBI single and a two-RBI double to take the 6-0 lead.

St. Edward's drops to 10-25 with an 8-17 conference record. The Hilltoppers will continue their series against Angelo State with a doubleheader tomorrow.
