CANYON, Texas – St. Edward's softball got a solid, complete-game performance in the pitcher's circle from
LISETTE URQUIDEZ but fell short in a 2-0 loss to No. 1-ranked West Texas A&M.
The Hilltoppers outhit the Lady Buffs 6-4, but West Texas A&M made the most of its hits, belting two home runs to account for the game's only runs.
Lauren Granger opened the game with a leadoff home run to right field in the bottom of the first. St. Edward's put a runner on second in the first and third but failed to plate a run. The Hilltoppers put two on again in the fourth but ended the inning with a double play.
St. Edward's loaded the bases with singles from
JERZIE PELHAM,
KATIE DILLON, and
ELLA HUTZLER but left all three stranded in their best opportunity.
Diana Murtha added a two-out solo blast in the sixth to extend the lead.
Dillon led St. Edward's with three hits in four at-bats. Hutzler,
MEGAN MORRIS, and Pelham added a hit each. Urquidez went six innings, allowing four hits with two strikeouts and a walk.
St. Edward's drops to 11-32 with a 9-24 conference record. The Hilltoppers will return home to host Texas Permian Basin on Saturday and Sunday.
