Softball Celebrates Senior Day With Sweep

AUSTIN, Texas – St. Edward's softball celebrated seniors CADIE BELLE CURRIE, GABI LOPEZ, and CHARLOTTE NUCCIO with a 5-1 victory over Midwestern State, extending its win streak to six.

Currie's fastball carried significant pop from the start, blowing past Kayla Bryant for a strikeout to open the game. Midwestern State plated a run, however, on a fluke play. Allie Monroe delivered a two-out single up the middle. Then, on her steal attempt, the ball and runner arrived at the bag simultaneously, with the throw from home careening off her helmet into the outfield to allow her to score on the error.

After St. Edward's left two stranded in the bottom of the first, Currie retired the side in order in the second. LAUREN HOYT carried the momentum into the bottom of the inning, leading off with a single down the left-field line.

After Hoyt advanced on a wild pitch, ALEA DESERRANO tied the game with an RBI single up the middle. Shyanne Florence followed with control issues in the pitcher's circle, hitting AUDRI CASTILLO and advancing both runners into scoring position on a wild pitch.

JERZIE PELHAM took advantage with a sac fly to left field to give St. Edward's the lead. Florence's struggles continued, walking KATIE DILLON and CHARLOTTE NUCCIO back-to-back to set up ELLA HUTZLER's two-RBI double to right field.

Midwestern State turned to its bullpen, calling on Kennedy Cameron. However, an error extended the inning, allowing one more run to cross for the 5-1 lead.

Currie continued to give the Hilltop a show in her final home start, retiring the next three in order, striking out Maegan Shannon, then Bryant for a second time.

Midwestern State put two on in the fourth, but the Hilltopper defense shut the Mustangs down with three consecutive outs. Both teams quickly moved through the next few innings, with Currie striking out two of three to end the game in the seventh.

Currie was excellent in her final home game, striking out four with only two walks, four hits, and one unearned run for her fifth win of the season. Dillon hit 1-for-2 with two walks and a run scored. Nuccio, Hutzler, DeSerrano, and Castillo all had a hit, with Hutzler driving in two.

St. Edward's improves to 17-32 with a 15-24 conference record. The Hilltoppers will close their regular season out on the road next weekend against Texas Woman's University.
