TYLER, Texas—St. Edward's softball team ended its weekend with an 8-0 loss to the defending Lone Star Conference champion and No. 6-ranked UT Tyler Patriots.
The Patriots broke the game open with a five-run second inning on five hits and an error. After Michelle Arias grounded out to open UT Tyler's at-bat,
LISETTE URQUIDEZ hit Smith, who stole second and advanced to third on an error. Cassidi Mullen and Tara Stewart followed with back-to-back singles, and Price drove them in with a triple to left-center.
Sam Schott drove Nicole Price in with a bunt for a single. Then, after Garcia lined out, Courtney Plocheck hit an RBI single to right field for the 5-0 lead, ending Urquidez's afternoon.
CADIE BELLE CURRIE came out of the bullpen and ended the inning. In her first weekend back, she showed some rust, hitting Smith and walking back-to-back hitters to load the bases in the third. Then, she surrendered an RBI single and hit Schott to score two more runs.
Currie retired the side in order in the fourth inning, then walked two and surrendered an RBI single in the fifth to trigger the run-rule.
ARIANNA VIDALES and
LAUREN HOYT each got a hit for St. Edward's.
After the loss, St. Edward's dropped to 11-29 with a 9-21 conference record. The Hilltoppers will remain on the road, traveling to Canyon, Texas, to play West Texas A&M starting Monday.
