CLINTON, Miss. – St. Edward's men's soccer wrapped up its season-opening road trip with a 5-2 loss to the Mississippi College Choctaws.
Mississippi College struck early with two goals in the first 20 minutes. Jayce Dotson found Lewis Matton at the 6:27 mark. The Choctaws kept the pressure up, but the St. Edward's defensive line blocked the next two attempts until Matton and Dotson connected again nearly ten minutes after the first goal. Matton completed the hat trick at 18:18 on an unassisted goal for the 3-0 lead.
The Choctaws scored two more goals in the half: a score from Sergio Garrido at 27:05 and another Matton goal at 30:42.
CHRISTIAN MEZAS put St. Edward's on the board, putting one into the back of the net at 31:35, ending the half with a 5-1 deficit.
MASOOD PORSA added another Hilltopper goal with a little more than two minutes remaining.
Missippi College held an 11-5 advantage in shots attempted in the first half, and St. Edward's carried an 8-3 advantage in the second, putting seven on goal.
TODD FULLER and
CHRISTIAN MEZAS each totaled three shots for St. Edward's.
St. Edward's will return home and host St. Mary's next Sunday in a non-conference Battle of the Saints against St. Mary's at 3:00 p.m.
