Mezas Turns Chaos Into Brilliance Against Oklahoma Christian

EDMOND, Okla. – Possessing a blinding pace and impossibly flexible ankles capable of cutting on a dime at seemingly impossible angles, forward CHRISTIAN MEZAS is among the most elusive players on the pitch—able to weave through traffic with deceptive ease.

On Wednesday night, the sophomore forward harnessed that elusiveness to help St. Edward's escape with a 3–2 comeback win over Oklahoma Christian, scoring two of the Hilltoppers' three second-half goals and drawing the foul that set up the third.
St. Edward's (6–4–3, 4–1–1 LSC) looked lifeless early, falling behind 2–0 before the 23rd minute. Oklahoma Christian scored on the game's first corner kick—not through tactical brilliance, but persistence. After goalkeeper ANGEL RAMIREZ punched away the initial service, the Eagles kept the play alive with two headers, the second ricocheting off the post before Tyler Ackah-Wheatcroft buried the rebound in the 12th minute.

Ten minutes later, Ackah-Wheatcroft struck again—this time sending a long ball over the top of the Hilltopper back line to Ethan Nakolo, who converted for a 2–0 lead that held through halftime.

Oklahoma Christian continued pressing after the break, forcing Ramirez into a critical save and another blocked shot before the Hilltoppers found life on the counter. Mezas turned what looked like a routine clearance into an opportunity.

Mezas won the ball as the lone Hilltopper between three Oklahoma Christian defenders, splitting the trio, darting middle, then wide right to create space for the first goal with four Eagles surrounding him in the box on a 1-on-5 break in the 69th minute.

Less than 10 minutes later, Mezas orchestrated the equalizer. Collecting a pass near midfield, he spun out of pressure, then made a hard cut middle through four defenders – parting the Red Sea – before drawing a foul in the box. ARTHUR SOUZA calmly converted the penalty to level the match.

With two minutes left, St. Edward's earned a free kick near midfield. The service into the box was flicked forward by MISAEL RANGEL, setting up Mezas, who stopped on a dime to seal off a defender and slipped a shot between two more for the game-winner.

The win extends St. Edward's unbeaten streak to four matches and propels the Hilltoppers to third in the Lone Star Conference standings with four games remaining—including a crucial test against first-place UT Dallas. St. Edward's returns home Saturday for Senior Day against UT Tyler.
