ALPINE, Texas – For the second time in as many weeks, St. Edward's men's soccer struck with six seconds remaining, dialing up some late-game magic to earn a 2-2 draw against Sul Ross State in windy Alpine, Texas.
The Hilltoppers (3-4-3, 1-1-1 LSC) again proved their flair for the dramatic, erasing a late deficit after surrendering two second-half goals to the Lobos.
Sul Ross State dictated the early tempo, keeping the ball on the ground and creating six first-half shots. The Lobos tested St. Edward's goalkeeper
ANGEL RAMIREZ early and often, putting three shots on frame and earning three corner kicks into the box.
But the Hilltoppers' back line held firm, clearing danger until they found their breakthrough in the 41st minute. Off a
MASOOD PORSA throw-in, St. Edward's ran a crisp give-and-go that sprung Porsa down the right side. His cross met
FILIP ADAMSKI on the far post for a diving header and a 1-0 lead going into halftime.
The Lobos equalized early in the second half with a direct ball over the top, springing a 3-on-2 break that ended with Diego Hernandez's shot bouncing off the underside of the crossbar and in at the 51st minute.
Sul Ross State continued to apply pressure, doubling St. Edward's in shots and finally taking the lead in the 84th minute when Joshua Hernandez-Gutierrez slotted home the go-ahead goal.
Trailing late and down a yellow card after a
TIMMY HOLLENBECK caution inside the final three minutes, the Hilltoppers looked out of time. But as they did a week ago, they found a way.
With seconds ticking away, St. Edward's earned a throw-in deep in the attacking third. Sul Ross State's clearance fell to
IZAIAH GARZA, who won a critical header.
JUD ANDERSON flicked it toward goal, and Hollenbeck—moments after being booked—hammered in the equalizer with six seconds left.
The Hilltoppers will look to carry their momentum and reputation for late heroics back to Austin on Saturday, hosting rival St. Mary's in the annual Battle of the Saints.
