AUSTIN, Texas — St. Edward's women's soccer closed the regular season with a dominant performance against Sul Ross State, defeating the Lobos 2-0 to enter the Lone Star Conference Tournament with momentum.
The Hilltoppers held possession for nearly 70 percent of the game, spending roughly half the game in its attacking third, generating 40 shots with 10 on target and seven corner kicks.
Sul Ross State struggled to press the ball past midfield against St. Edward's press, but doubled its efforts in and around the box, blocking 17 Hilltoppers shots at the point of attack.
MARIE HANNEDOUCHE tore through the midfield early, turning the corner for several crosses, including two at the foot of
RILEY SISSON directly in front of the net with an open look. Both times, Sul Ross State keeper Kathy Palmer turned Sisson's shot away with diving stops.
Palmer put in a stellar effort with eight saves, singlehandedly keeping the Lobos in the game with multiple spectacular stops.
Unable to find any room to the left or right of Palmer, Hannedouche finally broke through in the 29th minute by dropping a shot in the impossibly narrow window over Palmer's outstretched arms and just under the crossbar — delivering a one-touch left-footed shot off a deflected cross into the net for her sixth goal of the season.
St. Edward's broke through again in the 67th minute.
TESSA DABNEY repeatedly threatened Sul Ross State down the right side. Finally, she connected on a cross after
ISABELLA RUIZ delivered a perfectly weighted through ball, delivering the pass to
ABIGAIL HALL for the goal.
St. Edward's brings its conference record to .500 at 6-6-2, and 7-9-2 overall. The Hilltoppers will travel to play at Lubbock Christian on Friday at 7:00 p.m.
