Softball Defeats Regis, Falls to Southeastern Oklahoma State

CONROE, Texas – St. Edward's softball split its doubleheader for a second consecutive day, defeating Regis before falling to Southeastern Oklahoma State.

Game 1: St. Edward's 9, Regis 1

KATIE DILLON and LAUREN HOYT turned in multi-hit games, and KYLEN PADGETT turned in a dominant effort to lead St. Edward's to a five-inning victory over Regis.

Dillon set the tone with a leadoff triple to right-center at the bottom of the first, setting up Sofie Aponte's RBI double down the third base line. After Morris grounded out, SLOANE HILL and RYAN RANGEL drew back-to-back walks to load the bases, and CIANA RODRIGUEZ hit a sacrifice fly to score Aponte.

Padgett retired the side in order in the second, closing the inning with back-to-back strikeouts, and Hoyt continued the momentum with a leadoff single off a bunt. ARIANNA VIDALES hit an infield single on a 1-2 count, and Dillon loaded the base with a bunt. Aponte added to the Hilltopper lead with another sac fly.

Regis scored its lone run in the third. Romero-Barro hit a leadoff double, and Lia Magana moved her over with a groundout to first. After Padgett struck out Ybarra, she walked Mya Chaco,n and the Rangers scored on a first-and-third double steal.

After both teams went scoreless in the fourth, St. Edward's tacked on six runs in the fifth. Dillon and Aponte drew back-to-back walks, and Morris hit an RBI single to the center. Aponte also scored on a fielding error.

Hill drew a walk, and Morris scored on a passed ball. The Hilltoppers kept the momentum going, hitting four consecutive singles from ELLA HUTZLER, Hoyt, AUDRI CASTILLO, and Dillon. Hutzler, Hoyt, and Dillon all drove in a run, with Dillon scoring the walk-off RBI single on a drive up the middle.

Game 2: Southeastern Oklahoma State 7, St. Edward's 1

St. Edward's surrendered 10 hits, including two home runs and a double, in a 7-1 loss to Southeastern Oklahoma State.

The first two innings went by quickly. Southeastern Oklahoma State retired St. Edward's first six hitters in order, and the Hilltopper defense shut down six of the first seven batters faced.

Lorryn Johnson put the first hit and run on the board with a leadoff solo blast to center field to give Southeastern Oklahoma State the lead. St. Edward's threatened in the bottom of the inning when Hutzler hit a leadoff double down the left-field line. Hoyt moved her over with a sac bunt, but Hutzler was left stranded.

A fielding error extended what could've been a three-up, three-down inning for the Hilltopper defense, leading to a Serenity Ode two-RBI single to left center.

St. Edward's put two runners in scoring position in the fourth with a two-out single for Hill and a double through the left side by Rangel, but Rodriguez couldn't get the ball to drop on a fly out down the left-field line.

Both teams scored a run in the fifth. India McMurr hit a solo blast in the top of the inning, and Dillon drove in Hutzler with an RBI single up the middle.

Southeastern Oklahoma State loaded the bases with one out on back-to-back singles and a walk. Brinly Burke capitalized with a sac fly to right field, then Iliana Olivia and McMurr hit back-to-back RBI singles for the 7-1 lead.

Morris hit a leadoff double in the sixth, and Hutzler hit a leadoff single in the seventh, but both were left stranded. Hutzler hit 3-for-3 with a run scored. Dillon, Morris, Hill, and Rangel each had a hit.

St. Edward's is now 2-2 with one more game at the DII First Pitch Invitational, playing Saint Martin's on Sunday morning at 10:00.
