AUSTIN, Texas – MEGAN MORRIS hit a walk-off single, and
LISETTE URQUIDEZ flirted with perfection in a one-hit masterpiece in St. Edward's softball's 8-0 win over MSU-Denver in five innings.
Urquidez set the tone in the first inning. St. Edward's starting pitcher surrendered a leadoff infield single off a 1-2 count and went flawless the rest of the way, recording 15 consecutive outs without a hit, walk, or hit batter surrendered.
St. Edward's senior right-hander kept MSU-Denver in the infield for all but two outs. Urquidez also assisted on four of the Hilltoppers' 15 defensive outs and struck out two others, climbing the ladder to get Sam Mader and Katie Maney chasing high.
On offense, St. Edward's tweaked its lineup from Game 1, and the Hilltopper offense responded by batting through the order in a five-run inning. Morris hit a leadoff infield single, and then
JERZIE PELHAM found the gap through the left side against the double-play defensive shift.
After
RYAN RANGEL popped up to second,
ELLA HUTZLER loaded the bases with a single to center field, and
SLOANE HILL rippled the ball to left center, driving in Morris and Pelham with a two-RBI double.
CIANA RODRIGUEZ reloaded the bases with a bloop single falling in shallow right,
ALEA DESERRANO drove in Hutzler with a single to left field, and
JUNIPER DANIEL made a stellar first impression with a two-RBI double to right-center in her first at-bat at the Hilltop.
MSU-Denver turned to its bullpen, replacing starting pitcher Jenna Medhus with Mader to get out of the inning.
Mader breezed through the second innings and was two outs into the third when she surrendered back-to-back walks to Daniel and
ARIANNA VIDALES. After leaving eight runners stranded in the first game, St. Edward's capitalized on every opportunity in the second, and Morris made Mader pay with an RBI single through the right side to extend the lead.
St. Edward's loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the fifth. Rodriguez drew a leadoff walk, DeSerrano singled into shallow center field, and Daniel hit a seeing-eye single through the left side.
HANNAH BOETTCHER pinch-hit for Vidales and drew a walk for the RBI.
MSU-Denver turned to Cheyenne Prieto out of the bullpen, and Morris greeted her with a walk-off single that fell just out of the reach of shortstop Hanna DiFabio with the infield playing up to try and force the out at home.
Daniel was stellar in her Hilltop debut, hitting 2-for-2 with a walk, two RBI, and a run scored. DeSerrano hit 2-for-3 with a run and RBI, and Morris was 3-for-4 from the leadoff spot with two RBI and a run scored.
St. Edward's improves to 4-3 after splitting the doubleheader. Softball will host Colorado Christian tomorrow in a doubleheader starting at noon.
