AUSTIN, Texas – AUDRI CASTILLO missed a walk-off home run by roughly a foot, and St. Edward's softball surrendered a four-run lead in a 6-4, 11-inning loss to Colorado Christian to split the day's doubleheader.
St. Edward's starting pitcher,
MAKENNA HOLLOWAY, kept Colorado Christian in the infield in a three-up, three-down first inning and retired the first 11 hitters in order, including a strikeout to end the third.
Offensively, the Hilltoppers manufactured a run in the bottom of the first and second with assembly-line precision.
KATIE DILLON showcased her speed with an infield single, then stole second.
LAUREN HOYT executed a sacrifice bunt to move Dillon to third, and
MEGAN MORRIS drove her in on the groundout to shortstop.
St. Edward's followed a similar formula in the second.
SLOANE HILL drew a leadoff walk.
JERZIE PELHAM pinch-ran for her,
CIANA RODRIGUEZ moved her into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt, and
ALEA DESERRANO drove her in with a double down the left-field line that snuck just inside third base.
JUNIPER DANIEL moved DeSarrano to third with a groundout to shortstop, and
ARIANNA VIDALES drove her in with a slap-hitting double to left-center. Dillon drove in a fourth Hilltopper run with an infield single in the gap between first and second, with Vidales sliding in under the tag on the play at home for the 4-0 lead.
Colorado Christian broke up the perfect game with a two-out single to left field in the fourth, then got to Holloway in the fifth. Danae Lopez drew a leadoff walk, but Leah Garcia flied out to left field, and Lauren Garcia grounded into a fielder's choice out at second. Holloway hit Cheyenne Stark, and Quilling lifted a two-RBI double to left-center to cut the Hilltopper lead in half.
St. Edward's turned to
MADDIE AGUILAR out of the bullpen to start the sixth. Aguilar got the first hitter out but surrendered a solo blast to Kayla Eastburn to cut the Hilltopper lead to one. Lopez followed with a two-out single, representing the tying run, but Aguilar caught Leah Garcia looking to get out of the inning.
ELLA HUTZLER opened the bottom of the inning with a leadoff single ripped into center field, but the inning ended on a double play. The Colorado Chrisitan rally continued in the top of the seventh with a two-out RBI single from Elyse McMullin to tie the game before Peyton Marvel flied out to end the inning.
AUDRI CASTILLO pinch-hit for
JUNIPER DANIEL with one out in the bottom of the seventh and hit a towering shot to left field that caught the top of the extended wall, missing the walk-off home run by a foot and settling for a single.
KATIE DILLON hit a two-out infield single, but
LAUREN HOYT grounded into a fielder's choice out at third.
Aguilar surrendered a leadoff double in the eighth, but
LISETTE URQUIDEZ came out of the bullpen to retire the side. St. Edward's left a runner stranded in the bottom of the inning, and a baserunning mistake squandered a leadoff hit in the 10th.
McMullin broke through with a two-RBI single up the middle in the 11th to take the 6-4 lead. St. Edward's loaded the bases with two outs on two walks and a single but grounded into a fielder's choice up the middle at second to end the game.
Dillon hit 4-for-5 with an RBI and run scored, and DeSerrano hit 2-for-5. Morris, Htuzler, and Vidales each had a hit. St. Edward's drops to 5-4 with the loss and will play MSU-Denver tomorrow at 11:00 a.m.
