AUSTIN, Texas – St. Edward's women's soccer surrendered a pair of goals to Caid Jefferson – one in each half – to open Lone Star Conference play with a 2-0 loss to Oklahoma Christian despite doubling the Eagles in shot attempts.
The Hilltoppers threatened in the third minute with a long diagonal pass from
MARIE HANNEDOUCHE to
ANNIE ROCHA into the left corner. Rocha's shot, launched from outside the box, was headed out. The ricochet landed at the foot of Sierra Padilloa, whose shot sailed high.
Rocha launched again from outside the box in the 15th minute but was turned away by a leaping fingertip save from Oklahoma Christian keeper Breanna Wooten.
Wooten was reliable all game for the Eagles, recording four saves and breaking up several other opportunities with steady hands.
Oklahoma Christian struck in the 25th minute out of a free kick from midfield. Jaycie Daggs triggered the ball into the box near the left post. The Hilltopper defense headed the ball away, but Jefferson emerged from a scrum near the opposite post for the unassisted goal.
The Hilltoppers best opportunity came up empty in the 33rd minute when Rocha's shot glanced off the left woodwork and Hall's putback was stopped by Wooten.
Rocha worked into space five minutes into the second half, but couldn't muster much force behind the shot after being fouled by Raquel Fanelli.
LILLY ARELLANO's shot out of the free kick missed, and five minutes later, the Eagles put the game out of reach with another goal.
Zoe Ross received the ball out of a throw in deep in Oklahoma Christian's attacking third, made a hard step inside to create a passing lane and set the cross to Jefferson, who sealed off one defender, settled the ball, turned and scored.
The Hilltoppers answered with four shots in a five-minute stretch, but came away empty.
St. Edward's outshot Oklahoma Christian 15-7 and held a 3-0 advantage in corner kicks, led by Rocha's five, including two on goal.
RAINEY SIMMONS and
ABIGAIL HALL also put a shot on goal.
The Hilltoppers drop to 1-4 and will hit the road for a quick turnaround, facing West Texas A&M on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
