SAN ANGELO, Texas – St. Edward's women's soccer rallied from an early two-goal deficit but couldn't find a winner in a match that kept both teams' goalkeepers busy in a 2-2 draw against Angelo State.
The Rambelles shocked the Hilltoppers, scoring two goals in the first seven minutes. St. Edwards' struggled to clear the ball from its defensive third. Angelo State's Emily Thames jumped a passing lane, veered left, and delivered a cross to Whitni Newbill for the opening goal in the third minute.
Three minutes later, Sanai Stewart received the ball on the left flank in space against one Hilltopper defender, broke middle, and lofted a shot from outside the box that dropped in just over a leaping DARIA SCHLUMBOHM for the second goal.
St. Edward's responded with two shots on goal from ANNIE ROCHA, both stopped by Angelo State keeper Melyna Martinez. However, the second shot earned the Hilltoppers a corner kick, and MARIE HANNEDOUCHE triggered it beautifully, finding RILEY SISSON, who headed the ball through a small window for the goal in the 17th minute.
ANNIE ROCHA scored the equalizer just shy of the 30th minute on an opportunity created by the hustle of MACY JENNINGS. Jennings outraced and dispossessed a Rambelle defender in the deep right corner, sending a cross in front of the net that was weakly cleared into a pocket of space.
Rocha beat the Angelo State defense, setting the ball off her left foot, then crossing over to her right to freeze the defense and create a lane for a two-bounce shot into the lower right corner of the net to tie the game.
Angelo State regained momentum with a flurry of shots over the next 10 minutes, sending one off the right woodwork and another in the hands of Schlumbohm. MADISON CRESWELL and Rocha responded with opportunities in the final two minutes of the half, with Martinez stopping Rocha's attempt.
The Rambelles dictated the terms in the second half, getting seven shots to the Hilltoppers' three, including five on goal. Schlumbohm proved clutch, stopping all five to preserve the draw.
St. Edward's (2-4-1, 1-1-1) will return home to host I-35 rival St. Mary's in the Battle of the Saints under the lights of Lewis-Chen Family Field on Saturday, September 27 at 7:00 p.m.
