AUSTIN, Texas — St. Edward's women's soccer has turned defensive consistency into points over the past four matches. With three matches remaining in the regular season, the Hilltoppers are within reach of the Lone Star Conference tournament in a pivotal week.
St. Edward's hosts unbeaten DBU on Wednesday at 6 p.m. for Alumni Night before traveling to Lubbock Christian for a noon match Saturday.
The Hilltoppers enter the week 4-7-4 overall and 4-4-3 in conference play, sitting ninth with 15 points. Eighth-place UT Dallas holds the final qualifying spot with 16 points, while Lubbock Christian is seventh with 19. The top eight teams advance to the conference tournament.
St. Edward's has collected 10 of the past 12 available points, defeating Eastern New Mexico, UT Permian Basin, and Texas A&M International around a scoreless draw at UT Dallas. The Hilltoppers have outscored those opponents 5-0, recording four consecutive clean sheets.
Saturday's 1-0 victory against TAMIU demonstrated the patience that has accompanied that defensive improvement. St. Edward's controlled much of the match before
SIERRA PADILLA supplied the breakthrough in the 83rd minute, finishing a long pass over the defense from
TESS DABNEY.
The Hilltoppers generated opportunities by switching the point of attack, particularly through diagonal passes to
MACY JENNINGS on the right side. Their pressure eventually produced a 15-2 advantage in shots and eight corner kicks, all after halftime.
DARIA SCHLUMBOHM saved the Dustdevils' only shot on goal, and St. Edward's did not allow a second attempt until the 76th minute.
That combination of defensive control and multiple attacking options has helped reshape the season. After opening 0-5-1, St. Edward's has gone 4-2-3 over its past nine matches, allowing six goals during that stretch. The recent run gives the Hilltoppers a foundation heading into two demanding assignments.
Wednesday brings a DBU team that has paired one of the conference's most productive attacks with an equally difficult defense. The Patriots are 13-0-1 overall and 10-0-1 in conference play, having scored 51 goals while conceding four. They average nearly 22 shots per match and have earned 93 corner kicks.
DBU's latest performance showed how quickly it can establish control. The Patriots defeated Lubbock Christian 3-0 on Saturday, scoring at 1:12 and again at 2:15 before adding a third goal early in the second half.
McKenna Vela and Leah Hurley each contributed a goal and an assist. Tina Clark supplied the second goal, with Ashley Washburn providing the assist. DBU finished with a 17-3 advantage in shots and allowed only one attempt on target.
The opening sequence offers a clear priority for St. Edward's. DBU followed Vela's goal with a corner kick at 1:40, then Clark's goal 35 seconds later. Preventing an initial chance will need to be followed by securing the next possession and limiting the repeated pressure that allows the Patriots to keep attacking.
DBU has also demonstrated the ability to find a result when an early breakthrough does not arrive. Against Texas Woman's last Wednesday, Kylar Coffman scored in the 85th minute to preserve a 1-1 draw and the Patriots' unbeaten record.
St. Edward's leads the all-time series 26-17-3, although DBU has won the past six meetings. Last season's match remained scoreless until Skylar Belanger scored at 62:52 for a 1-0 Patriot victory. DBU held a 26-4 advantage in shots and earned 14 corners, illustrating the defensive workload the Hilltoppers will look to reduce this time.
Saturday's trip to Lubbock Christian carries direct implications for the tournament race. The Lady Chaps are 8-3-4 overall and 5-2-4 in conference play, four points ahead of St. Edward's entering the week.
Lubbock Christian had gone four matches unbeaten before Saturday's loss to DBU, winning three consecutive matches against UT Permian Basin, Eastern New Mexico and TAMIU before drawing UT Dallas. The Lady Chaps travel to Texas Woman's on Wednesday before hosting the Hilltoppers.
Journey Curs leads Lubbock Christian with five goals and four assists. Logan Holloway has added four goals despite making only one start, while Kaslee Roskelley contributes three goals and three assists. Claire Jacobson shares the team lead with four assists.
The Lady Chaps have scored 27 goals while allowing 15, but eight of those goals came in one nonconference victory at Western Colorado. Their conference results offer a more measured picture of an opponent comfortable competing in close matches.
Lubbock Christian's scoreless draw at UT Dallas provides a useful comparison. The Lady Chaps were outshot 14-5 but limited the Comets to one shot on goal. Roskelley accounted for three of LCU's five attempts, while its defense protected the point despite facing nine second-half shots.
For St. Edward's, moving the defense before attempting the final pass could be especially valuable. The wide switches that created space against TAMIU offer one way to stretch a team that has already shown it can withstand a higher shot volume without allowing many attempts on frame.
The Hilltoppers hold a 15-3-3 advantage in the series and won last season's regular-season meeting 2-1 in Austin. The teams later played to a 1-1 draw in the conference tournament.
St. Edward's has made its postseason pursuit possible through a sustained defensive response. This week presents an opportunity to build on that foundation against the conference leader and a direct competitor before closing the regular season at Sul Ross State on Oct. 27.
