Hilltoppers Look to Finish the Job in Dustdevil Rematch

| By:

AUSTIN, Texas — St. Edward's men's soccer needed less than three minutes to take the lead against Texas A&M International in its season opener, then came within two minutes of making it stand. Six weeks later, the Hilltoppers welcome the Dustdevils back with conference points at stake and another opportunity to turn a promising performance into a complete result.

The Hilltoppers host Texas A&M International on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Lewis-Chen Family Field, entering the rematch 2-6-2 overall and 1-3 in Lone Star Conference play. St. Edward's broke through with a 5-0 victory over Sul Ross State last week before falling 2-1 at St. Mary's in the Battle of the Saints.

That six-goal week provided some traction for an attack that had been held scoreless in its previous two matches. IZAIAH GARZA scored against both opponents and leads the Hilltoppers with seven points on two goals and three assists. ISAAC GUAJARDO has added two goals and an assist in four appearances, joining Garza, BARTEK ZABEK, Misa Rangel and SHUNJI WATANABE in a five-way tie for the team lead in goals.

The next step is making those contributions more consistent. St. Edward's averages 13.8 shots per match, fourth in the conference, but puts only 34.8 percent on target. Texas A&M International generates fewer attempts at 11.1 per match, yet leads the LSC and ranks 11th nationally in shot accuracy at 53.2 percent. The difference leaves the Dustdevils averaging 5.9 shots on goal to the Hilltoppers' 4.8.

Those numbers suggest Wednesday's challenge will be as much about the quality of opportunities as the quantity. St. Edward's has players capable of creating chances through different combinations, but needs more of those possessions to end with a clear look at goal and a demanding save.

The first meeting offers a starting point. JAKE CICCARELLO scored off an ALEX LOYA assist at 2:50, and the Hilltoppers limited Texas A&M International to seven shots, including just two on goal. St. Edward's held a 9-7 advantage in attempts and a 4-2 edge in shots on target, but goalkeeper Nicklas Berg-Eriksen kept the Dustdevils within reach, including a save against EBUKA BRIGHT-OSIGWE in the 84th minute. Jaime Martinez equalized at 88:06 to salvage the 1-1 draw.

That late response has become a recurring feature of Texas A&M International's season. Heiko Drömer delivered an 87th-minute winner in its first meeting with Sul Ross State, and Abner Zuniga scored the decisive goal in the 82nd minute of Saturday's 3-2 victory over the Lobos. Zuniga scored twice in that match, putting five of his six attempts on target as TAMIU finished with 20 shots and 13 on goal.

The Dustdevils arrive 5-3-2 overall and 2-1-1 in conference play after consecutive victories over Lubbock Christian and Sul Ross State. Picked 11th in the preseason conference poll, TAMIU has already surpassed last season's three overall wins and one conference victory, giving substance to head coach Claudio Arias' preseason emphasis on greater depth and maturity.

Zuniga, Martinez and Aidan Williams share the team lead with three goals apiece. Zuniga supplies the most persistent shooting threat, leading the conference with 1.6 shots on goal per match. Martinez has been especially economical, scoring three times on six attempts, while Williams has supplied two game-winners. The distribution means St. Edward's must track multiple threats rather than allowing its attention to settle on one scorer.

There are openings at the other end. TAMIU has conceded 16 goals in 10 matches, including three across its two victories last week. Berg-Eriksen provides a dependable last line with 44 saves and a .772 save percentage, making sustained pressure and support around the initial shot important for a Hilltopper attack seeking more productive possessions.

St. Edward's showed in August that it could limit the Dustdevils' chances and establish an early advantage. Wednesday asks the Hilltoppers to build on that foundation: create cleaner opportunities, remain connected defensively, and carry their best stretches through the final whistle.
