AUSTIN, Texas — Graduate midfielder SHUNJI WATANABE earned first-team All-Lone Star Conference honors, leading five St. Edward's men's soccer players recognized Tuesday when the league announced its postseason awards.
Junior forward BARTEK ZABEK made the second team, sophomore defender ALEX LOYA earned third-team honors, and midfielder JUAN SEGURA and forward ISAAC GUAJARDO were named to the All-Freshman Team. The league's head coaches voted on the awards.
Watanabe moved up from the third team a year ago after appearing in all 16 regular-season matches and making 12 starts. The Tokyo native finished with three goals and an assist, scoring St. Edward's fourth goal in a 4-2 win at West Texas A&M that clinched an LSC Tournament berth. On Senior Day against DBU, he chased down a long ball into the left corner, shielded it from a defender, and drew a foul just outside the penalty area to set up the free kick that led to the tying goal with the Hilltoppers down a man.
Zabek did most of the damage in the regular-season finale, scoring a first-half hat trick at West Texas A&M to earn LSC Offensive Player of the Week honors. The Frisco, Texas, native led St. Edward's with eight goals and 19 points, ranking second in the conference in both categories during the regular season. He scored six of his eight goals in league play and added three assists.
Loya logged 1,082 minutes across 15 regular-season appearances, starting 13 matches for the Hilltoppers. The Pflugerville, Texas, native also recorded an assist.
Segura and Guajardo combined for five points in a 5-0 win over Sul Ross State. Segura, from Birmingham, Ala., supplied two assists in that match and finished the regular season with three in 16 appearances, including eight starts. Guajardo, an Austin native, scored twice and added an assist against Sul Ross State, then scored in a 1-1 draw with Oklahoma Christian. He finished with three goals and an assist in 10 appearances, including five starts.
