LUBBOCK, Texas — After injuries kept him out of much of the fall, St. Edward's graduate student BEN BAYLY returned to the lineup when the Hilltoppers needed him most, finishing 14th at Saturday's Lone Star Conference Cross Country Championships to earn All-LSC honors and lead St. Edward's to a ninth-place team finish.
Bayly completed the 8K course in 25:21.2, securing one of the conference's 15 all-conference positions in his first cross country race since the Texas A&M Invitational on Sept. 11. His return provided an important boost to a Hilltopper lineup that spent much of the season developing its younger runners while waiting for several veterans to regain their health.
Bayly opened the season by running 25:23.9 at Texas A&M, finishing as the first NCAA Division II competitor across the line in a field dominated by Division I programs. Saturday's performance brought him back into championship competition, where he finished less than four seconds behind the 11th-place runner and secured his place among the conference's top 15.
Junior HOGAN HEIKKINEN continued his late-season emergence, finishing second for St. Edward's and 24th overall in 25:39.2. Heikkinen entered the championships coming off a breakthrough performance at the DBU Old Glory Gallop, where he ran 24:38.6, the fourth-fastest 8K in program history.
After working his way back from injuries, Heikkinen's return to form has provided the Hilltoppers with another experienced runner capable of competing near the front of the lineup. His 24th-place conference finish marked an encouraging continuation of that progress, giving St. Edward's two runners among the top 25.
Sophomore Javier Ramirez finished third for the Hilltoppers and 49th overall in 26:27.7. Ramirez has emerged as a consistent contributor throughout the season, including a 25:02.7 performance at Old Glory, and helped provide stability behind Bayly and Heikkinen.
Junior ARLO GONZALES made his season debut at the conference championships after missing the previous meets, finishing fourth for St. Edward's and 58th overall in 26:36.3. Gonzales, an all-conference performer a year ago, added another experienced presence to a lineup that had relied heavily on freshmen throughout the regular season.
Freshman CALEB KYBURZ completed the scoring five in 27:08.3, placing 77th overall. Junior PARKER STEVENS followed in 27:33.7 to finish 88th, and freshman ANTHONY GONZALEZ rounded out the Hilltoppers' seven runners in 27:44.6, placing 92nd.
St. Edward's finished ninth out of 14 teams with 205 points, just two points behind eighth-place UT Dallas and four behind seventh-place Western New Mexico. The Hilltoppers averaged 26:11 across their scoring five, finishing ahead of Lubbock Christian, Texas A&M-Kingsville, Eastern New Mexico, Angelo State, and Sul Ross State.
West Texas A&M won the men's team championship with 26 points, followed by Texas A&M International with 70 and Dallas Baptist with 121.
The championship marked a significant step in the Hilltoppers' season-long effort to rebuild their competitive depth. With Bayly returning to earn all-conference honors, Heikkinen rediscovering his form, and Gonzales making his season debut, St. Edward's brought together a more experienced lineup for the first time this fall.
The Hilltoppers will now turn their attention to the NCAA Division II South Central Regional Championships, where the continued return of their veteran runners offers an opportunity to build on Saturday's performance.
