AUSTIN, Texas — Big swings changed the shape of Game 1, drowning out St. Edward's advantages in the margins in a 4-2 loss to open the doubleheader against Western New Mexico.
Both teams drove the ball deep all afternoon. St. Edward's found the fence. Western New Mexico found a way over it.
The Hilltoppers struck first, blending speed and power to manufacture an early run. ALEA DESERRANO legged out an infield single, and DAFNE MERCADO pushed both runners into scoring position with a drive to deep left-center that glanced off Marleigh Manns' outstretched glove. RYAN RANGEL followed with a sacrifice fly to right to open the scoring.
Western New Mexico answered by capitalizing on traffic — a walk and an error setting the table for Hannah Martinez's sacrifice fly to even the game.
St. Edward's regained control in the fourth. ALYSSA BURDGE roped a ball into the Blue Monster in left for a stand-up double, and Hannah Zachary lined a single down the left-field line to give the Hilltoppers a 2-1 lead.
In the circle, MADDIE AGUILAR worked around traffic with poise, pounding the lower half of the zone and keeping the Mustangs off balance. She carried a no-hitter into the fifth before Addisne Byers made the first hit count, lifting a game-tying home run over the Monster.
The momentum flipped in the sixth. HALEY CARMONA entered in relief, and Manns delivered the decisive swing — a two-run home run to straightaway center that pushed Western New Mexico in front for good.
St. Edward's continued to threaten late. The Hilltoppers put two runners on in both the sixth and seventh innings, including a towering drive from SLOANE HILL that was hauled in at the wall. In the final frame, Rangel sent a deep fly to center with two on and two out, but Lauryn Carbajal secured it just before colliding with the fence to end the game.
The Hilltoppers created opportunities throughout, collecting 10 hits but leaving eight runners on base. DARIAN DELEON and Mercado combined to go 5-for-8 from the top of the order but crossed the plate just once without driving in a run.
Western New Mexico managed only four hits — but two swings proved decisive.
