TYLER, Texas — St. Edward's showed flashes of rhythm and resilience throughout Saturday's road doubleheader at UT Tyler, but a pair of decisive middle innings ultimately tilted both games in favor of the Patriots, as the Hilltoppers fell 7-2 in the opener and 11-3 in Game 2 at Irwin Field.
The afternoon opened with a tightly contested Game 1 that slipped away in a single inning. After UT Tyler scratched across runs in the first and second, the Hilltoppers found themselves within reach before the Patriots broke through in the third. Using just two hits, UT Tyler capitalized on walks, hit batters, and defensive pressure to plate five runs — only two of them earned — and build a 7-0 advantage.
St. Edward's continued to compete, breaking through in the fourth when
ALYSSA BURDGE drove a solo home run down the left-field line to get the Hilltoppers on the board. Opportunities followed, and in the seventh,
SLOANE HILL delivered an RBI single to score
CIANA RODRIGUEZ, but the early deficit proved too much to overcome.
ARIANNA VIDALES set the tone at the top of the lineup with a perfect 3-for-3 performance, while Burdge added two hits to lead a seven-hit effort.
Game 2 offered a different script early, and a glimpse of what could have been. After falling behind 1-0, the Hilltoppers responded in the third inning, turning traffic into production as Rodriguez and
HANNA ZACHARY reached ahead of Hill, who delivered a two-run double to give St. Edward's its first lead of the day at 2-1.
The momentum carried into the fourth, where
DAFNE MERCADO doubled and later came around to score on an RBI single from
JERZIE PELHAM, tying the game at 3-3 and putting the Hilltoppers on even footing.
But much like the opener, the middle innings proved decisive. UT Tyler answered immediately with a two-run fourth before taking full control in the fifth, using a combination of timely hits and defensive miscues to score four runs — three unearned — and create separation.
Despite outhitting the Patriots 12-11 in the nightcap, St. Edward's couldn't convert enough of its opportunities, stranding eight runners and managing just three runs across its 12 hits.
Across both games, the Hilltoppers generated offense and found moments of control, but UT Tyler consistently capitalized on extended innings and defensive openings. As conference play continues, St. Edward's will look to tighten execution in those key stretches and turn competitive innings into complete performances.
