CANYON, Texas — Facing one of the nation's top programs on the road, St. Edward's battled No. 2 West Texas A&M on Thursday at Schaeffer Park, but the Lady Buffs capitalized on early momentum in both games to complete a Lone Star Conference doubleheader sweep.
West Texas A&M set the tone quickly in the opener, using the long ball to seize control in the first inning. After a leadoff single, Jordyn De Los Santo launched a two-run home run to left-center to give the Lady Buffs a 2–0 lead.
The Hilltoppers worked to settle in defensively, but the hosts extended their advantage in the second. De Los Santo struck again with a three-run homer to highlight a four-hit inning that pushed the lead to 5–0.
West Texas A&M continued to build on the momentum in the third inning when Bella Holland blasted a two-run homer, followed immediately by De Los Santo's third home run of the game to make it 8–0.
St. Edward's broke through in the fourth when
DAFNE MERCADO drove a solo home run to left field, accounting for the Hilltoppers' lone run of the contest. The Hilltoppers later added a baserunner on a
SOFIA APONTE single in the fifth, but West Texas A&M sealed the run-rule victory in the bottom half when Holland connected for a three-run homer down the left-field line to end the game 11–1.
The Lady Buffs carried that momentum into the nightcap, erupting for five runs in the opening inning. Bella Holland started the rally with a triple before De Los Santo drove in the first run with an RBI single. After a walk and another run-scoring hit, Cadence Colborn delivered the biggest blow with a three-run homer to center that quickly put St. Edward's in a 5–0 hole.
West Texas A&M added four more runs in the second inning to extend the lead to 9–0. Abby Howell highlighted the frame with a two-run homer, while the Lady Buffs also capitalized on defensive miscues to push across additional runs.
The Hilltoppers managed two hits in the game, including singles from
RYAN RANGEL and
SLOANE HILL, but West Texas A&M pitching limited St. Edward's offensive opportunities throughout the contest.
Despite the early deficit, St. Edward's pitching settled down late as
JAYDEN CORTEZ worked three innings in relief and kept the Lady Buffs off the scoreboard the rest of the way, but the Hilltoppers were unable to mount a rally in the 9–0 final.
St. Edward's continues Lone Star Conference play at Eastern New Mexico University tomorrow.
