Hilltoppers Push Defending Champs, UT Tyler Escapes with Sweep

AUSTIN, Texas — Against the standard of a defending national champion, the margins shrink, the pressure builds, and the game often hinges on a swing or two.

On Friday at Diane Daniels Field, St. Edward's found itself right there in both games, but UT Tyler delivered the decisive blows each time, sweeping the Hilltoppers 4-2 and 2-0 in a Lone Star Conference doubleheader.

The opener unfolded as a back-and-forth test of response.

UT Tyler struck first with a two-run opening inning, but the Hilltoppers answered immediately in the second. Loading the bases through patience and pressure, St. Edward's broke through when CIANA RODRIGUEZ shot a two-run single up the middle to even the game at 2-2, briefly flipping the momentum and energy back to the home dugout.

From there, the game settled into a pitcher's duel until the Patriots struck again.

A two-out rally in the fifth proved decisive, as UT Tyler pieced together consecutive hits, capped by another clutch two-run single from Kaelyn Lerma to reclaim a 4-2 lead. The Hilltoppers threatened intermittently, drawing eight walks and putting traffic on the bases, but couldn't find the tying hit, stranding nine runners in the loss.

If game one was about missed chances, game two was about razor-thin margins.

Behind KYLEN PADGETT, St. Edward's matched the defending champions pitch-for-pitch. Padgett limited UT Tyler to just three hits across seven innings, navigating traffic and keeping the Patriots off balance throughout.

But one inning and a miscue proved the difference.

UT Tyler broke through in the fourth, using a double, a fielding error, and a timely RBI single to manufacture two runs without ever fully squaring up the Hilltopper right-hander.

That was all the support Alli Kimball needed.

The UT Tyler ace held St. Edward's to just two hits in a complete-game shutout, repeatedly working out of early-count contact and limiting any sustained pressure as the Hilltoppers were unable to mount a late push.

Across both games, St. Edward's showed flashes of matching one of the nation's best — answering early in game one, and going toe-to-toe in the circle in game two — but the difference came in execution in key moments.

Against the defending national champions, the Hilltoppers were close.

Just not quite close enough — yet.
