AUSTIN, Texas — St. Edward's built early leads in both games but Lubbock Christian answered each time, completing a doubleheader sweep of the Hilltoppers with a 3-2 win in Game 1 and a 7-4 extra-inning victory in Game 2 on Friday at Diane Daniels Field.
The opener was a tight, pitching-driven contest that saw the Hilltoppers strike first in the bottom of the first.
HANNA ZACHARY singled and an error extended the inning before
SLOANE HILL delivered an RBI single to right, bringing home
DAFNE MERCADO for a 1–0 lead.
Lubbock Christian answered in the third inning, using two singles and a pair of walks to manufacture two runs and take a 2–1 advantage.
St. Edward's pulled even in the fifth when Darian DeLeon reached on an infield single and advanced on a throwing error before scoring on
CIANA RODRIGUEZ's RBI groundout.
The tie lasted only an inning. In the sixth, Coryn Burris launched a solo home run to deep left field, putting the Lady Chaparrals back on top 3–2.
The Hilltoppers threatened in the seventh as DeLeon singled and Rodriguez followed with a base hit to push the tying run into scoring position, but Lubbock Christian recorded the final out to preserve the one-run win.
Game two followed a dramatically different script.
St. Edward's struck first on
HANNA ZACHARY's RBI single through the left side, then pieced together a five-hit rally in the fourth to seize control.
DAFNE MERCADO started the surge with a double before
ALYSSA BURDGE added another two-bagger, laying down a bunt that tiptoed the line as Lubbock Christian waited for it to roll foul, only to die in fair territory.
Darian DeLeon then ripped a two-run double to left center, and
ALEA DESERRANO added a sacrifice fly to cap a three-run inning that gave the Hilltoppers a 4–0 lead.
Lubbock Christian chipped away in the sixth when Ashlinn Hamilton lined a two-run double and later scored during a defensive miscue to trim the deficit to 4–3.
The Lady Chaparrals finally drew even in the seventh on Hamilton's RBI single before the teams traded scoreless innings into extras.
In the tenth, Lubbock Christian broke through. Kadin Vire delivered a two-run double up the middle with the bases loaded, and Hamilton followed with an RBI single to stretch the lead to 7–4.
St. Edward's went quietly in the bottom half of the inning, sealing the sweep.
DeLeon led the Hilltopper offense in the nightcap with three hits and two RBIs, while Zachary and Hill each added multiple hits across the doubleheader.
St. Edward's will look to bounce on Sunday against Midwestern State at Diane Daniels Field.
