KINGSVILLE, Texas — St. Edward's put itself in position in both games Friday, but Texas A&M-Kingsville made the final plays, taking a walk-off win in Game 1 and holding off a late rally in Game 2 to sweep the doubleheader.
The opener turned into a back-and-forth battle that stretched into extra innings. The Hilltoppers struck first in the opening frame when
HANNA ZACHARY came around to score on a miscue, then broke through in the fifth as
SOFIA APONTE reached and scored during a chaotic sequence that included multiple Dustdevil errors, while Darian DeLeon added a key double and later crossed the plate.
In the circle,
HALEY CARMONA worked into the seventh, holding Kingsville in check before the Dustdevils chipped away. A steal of home in the seventh tied the game, erasing St. Edward's lead.
The Hilltoppers regained the edge in the eighth when
JERZIE PELHAM came home on a wild pitch, but Kingsville answered in the bottom half with a walk-off two-run double to take the 6-5 win.
In Game 2, Texas A&M-Kingsville jumped ahead early, but St. Edward's responded in the fifth.
SOFIA APONTE delivered an RBI single to get the Hilltoppers on the board, Darian DeLeon drove in a run with a groundout, and
SLOANE HILL added a sacrifice fly to cut the deficit in half.
The Hilltoppers made one more push in the seventh, as
JUNIPER DANIEL doubled to spark the rally and
RYAN RANGEL drove in two with a single to bring the tying run aboard, but Kingsville held on for the 7-5 final.
Offensively,
SOFIA APONTE and
ALEAH HERNANDEZ led the way for St. Edward's on the day, helping power a 19-hit effort across the two games, but the Hilltoppers couldn't quite get over the line as Kingsville secured both wins.
