SILVER CITY, N.M. — St. Edward's softball dropped both ends of Friday's doubleheader at Western New Mexico, falling 9-1 in Game 1 and 8-0 in Game 2.
St. Edward's struck first in the opener, with
HANNA ZACHARY and
ARIANNA VIDALES opening the game with consecutive singles before Darian DeLeon moved both into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt.
SLOANE HILL followed with an RBI single to left field, but a double play halted the Hilltoppers' momentum.
Western New Mexico answered immediately with a two-run home run in the bottom of the first, then added a run in the second on Ciara Spencer's RBI single. Marleigh Manns hit a two-run homer in the third, and Antonya Lucero added a two-run double later in the inning. The Mustangs added two more solo home runs in the fourth to extend the lead to 9-1.
In Game 2, Western New Mexico opened the scoring in the second after Hannah Martinez led off with a double and scored on Antonya Lucero's sacrifice fly. Spencer followed with an RBI single to center, and the Mustangs added another run in the third.
Western New Mexico broke the game open with three runs in the fourth, highlighted by home runs from Lucero and Abbi Markus, then closed it out with two runs in the fifth, ending the game on Spencer's RBI single.
Hill finished 3-for-4 with an RBI across the doubleheader. St. Edward's will travel to Sul Ross State for its final road doubleheader of the season on Sunday.
