Early Goals Lift UT Tyler Past St. Edward’s

TYLER, Texas — St. Edward's women's soccer entered Wednesday carrying momentum from an unbeaten three-match stretch, but two early UT Tyler goals forced the Hilltoppers to chase the match in a 2-0 road loss.

The Patriots scored twice in the opening 16 minutes, getting goals from Ella Anderson and Celine Diaz, before St. Edward's settled into the match. The Hilltoppers held UT Tyler scoreless over the final 74 minutes and played the Patriots even in shots after halftime, but were unable to erase the early deficit. 397193

St. Edward's generated the first shot of the afternoon when RILEY SISSON pushed an attempt wide right in the fourth minute. UT Tyler answered quickly, with Anderson finding the breakthrough at 8:29 for her fourth goal of the season.

The Patriots continued applying pressure, earning three corner kicks over the next four minutes. Goalkeeper DARIA SCHLUMBOHM stopped an attempt from Carson Glenn in the 13th minute, but UT Tyler doubled its advantage shortly afterward. Anderson set up Diaz for a goal at 15:10, putting St. Edward's in a 2-0 hole.

From there, the Hilltoppers began finding more of a foothold. ANNIE ROCHA had an attempt blocked in the 22nd minute, and St. Edward's earned two first-half corner kicks. TRULY CUEVAS produced the Hilltoppers' best opportunity of the half after entering off the bench, putting a shot on frame in the 39th minute that UT Tyler goalkeeper Robbi Curry saved.

Schlumbohm helped keep the deficit manageable while the Hilltoppers worked their way into the match. The senior goalkeeper made back-to-back saves against Mayla Dawkins in the 35th and 36th minutes and finished with three saves.

St. Edward's came out of halftime with a reshuffled lineup and prevented UT Tyler from reproducing its first-half pressure. After being outshot 9-3 with the Patriots taking six corners before halftime, the Hilltoppers played UT Tyler even at three shots apiece in the second half and did not concede a corner.

Rocha led the effort to get St. Edward's back into the match. She sent an attempt wide in the 60th minute before testing Curry three minutes later, forcing the UT Tyler goalkeeper into her second save. ISABELLA RUIZ later pushed an attempt wide right in the 77th minute for the Hilltoppers' final shot.

Rocha finished with a team-high three shots, while Cuevas accounted for St. Edward's other shot on goal. The Hilltoppers finished with six shots to UT Tyler's 12 and three corner kicks to the Patriots' six.

The loss ends St. Edward's three-match unbeaten stretch and moves the Hilltoppers to 1-6-3 overall and 1-3-2 in Lone Star Conference play. UT Tyler improves to 5-2-1 and 4-1-0 in conference.
