DENVER — St. Edward's women's soccer generated a season-high 20 shots and controlled much of the opening half, but Regis capitalized on an own goal before Renata Larracilla delivered the game-winner in the 76th minute to defeat the Hilltoppers 2-1 Sunday morning.
The Hilltoppers played on the front foot from the opening whistle, producing six shots in the first 14 minutes. ANNIE ROCHA initiated the breakthrough in the 11th, setting up RILEY SISSON for her second goal in three games and an early 1-0 lead.
St. Edward's continued applying pressure after the goal. Rocha forced Regis goalkeeper Maggie Payne into two saves and had another attempt blocked, while DAYLAN NATES later put a shot on frame. The Hilltoppers finished the half with 14 shots, including six on goal.
Regis found its equalizer against the run of play in the 28th minute when pressure inside the penalty area resulted in an own goal.
The Rangers created more of the danger after halftime, limiting St. Edward's to one attempt over the first 32 minutes of the period. Goalkeeper PEYTON MEDINA, who replaced DARIA SCHLUMBOHM at the break, made saves in the 51st and 72nd minutes to keep the match level.
Regis finally broke through at the 75:20 mark. Paula Igual provided the service for Larracilla, who scored her first goal of the season to give the Rangers a 2-1 advantage.
St. Edward's responded with a late push. ABIGAIL HALL forced Payne into a save less than three minutes after the goal, and MADISON CRESWELL sent two attempts narrowly wide. CLAIRE SMITH had a shot blocked in the 89th minute before RAINEY SIMMONS' final attempt sailed high in the closing seconds.
The Hilltoppers finished with a 20-19 advantage in shots and held 53 percent of the possession. Regis placed 10 attempts on target compared to eight for St. Edward's and earned five corner kicks to the Hilltoppers' one.
Rocha led St. Edward's with five shots and recorded her first assist of the season. Creswell added four attempts, including two on goal. Schlumbohm and Medina combined with the Hilltopper defense for nine saves.
