Hilltoppers ink 11 footballers to St. Edward’s

AUSTIN, Texas – Nine seniors were out the door following the 2017 soccer season, so St. Edward's head women's soccer coach Nick Cowell responded Wednesday by signing 11 for the NCAA Soccer National Signing Day.

Eight native Texans, a Floridian, a Coloradoan and an international signee from Kopavogur, Iceland are expected to join the Hilltoppers beginning with the fall of 2018. The class includes six defenders and one goalkeeper on the defensive side while Cowell also signed three forwards and one midfielder.

"This class has to fill a lot of holes with the loss of our nine seniors, but we feel that we have a talented, athletic and highly motivated group of players who will represent St. Edward's University women's soccer well both on and off the field," Cowell said. "The class is positionally well-balanced with athletes who can play defensively and offensively. On the field, our program prides itself on its relentless competitiveness, and these student-athletes will fit right into the team ethos of the team and coaches. We are looking forward to these amazing players and people to be the foundation for the next four years."

The Hilltoppers are coming off an 11-3-5 overall season in 2017 where the Hilltoppers posted a 9-2-3 record in the Heartland Conference for a second-place finish in the regular-season standings.

SEU women's soccer is a staple of success for the athletics department with 10 NCAA Tournament appearances, all under Cowell, who will enter his 13th season as SEU head coach in 2018.
