Box Score SAN ANTONIO , Texas -The #12 St. Edward's Hilltoppers won their fourth-straight match Friday evening defeating Heartland Conference rival St. Mary's, 5-1 at Rattler Field.
St. Edward's (11-2, 5-0 HC) opened the scoring in the 10 thminute when they launched a counter attack that saw junior John Calandro send a through-pass to sophomore Robert Georgiefski, who then beat the Rattler goalkeeper for the early goal. Calandro tacked on another goal for the Hilltoppers in the 35 thminute when he stole a pass and scored from 20 yards out.
St. Mary's (3-7, 0-5 HC) cut the lead in half when Joaquin Rangel sent a header past Hilltopper goalkeeper Matt Moore in the 41 stminute. Sean Strater had the assist from a free kick. However, St. Edward's had an answer as sophomore Trey Perkins scored in the 42 ndminute when he put home a rebound shot from a shot from senior Patrick Miller that hit the crossbar.
Late in the second half, Kevin Klaus and Jorge Vega scored to put the game away. Klaus scored in the 85 thminute on an assist from both sophomore Sean Meller and Georgiefski. Vega scored his team-leading fifth goal in the 87 thminute.
St. Mary's outshot the Hilltoppers, 14-13, with both teams putting six shots on goal. Moore outdueled St. Mary's goalkeeper Brett Collier, making five saves compared to just one save for Collier.
The Hilltoppers will be back in action Sunday when they host Incarnate Word. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at the SEU Soccer Field. St. Edward's defeated the Cardinals in San Antonio on Oct. 10th, 1-0.
