Box Score WICHITA , Kan. -The St. Edward's men's soccer took over sole possession of first place in the Heartland Conference with a 2-1 victory over Newman Sunday afternoon. This victory over the Jets coupled with Newman defeating Incarnate Word, 2-1, in overtime Friday evening gives the Hilltoppers a one-match advantage with just two matches to play in the regular season.
St. Edward's (13-4, 7-1 HC) outshot Newman, 12-3 in the first half but both defenses kept the ball out of the back of the net.
In the second half, sophomore Glen Marshall sent a shot in on goal and it bounced off of the Jet goalkeeper and right to senior Patrick Miller. The midfielder put into the net for his second goal in as many matches. Marshall received an assist on the goal that occurred in the 53 rdminute.
The Hilltoppers added to the lead in the 68 thminute when junior Kevin Brolan sent a through ball to sophomore Sean Meller who then beat the Jet goalkeeper one-on-one to put St. Edward's in control.
Newman (6-8-4, 3-4-2 HC) got a late goal in the 90 thminute when Brian Alvarez on a on-timer off of a pass from Renato Ramlochan.
St. Edward's outshot Newman, 19-8, and put six shots on goal compared to just one for the Jets. The Hilltoppers also had seven cornerkicks while Newman had just one.
St. Edward's will be back in action Friday when they take on Heartland Conference rival St. Mary's. Kick-off is set for 2 p.m. at the SEU Soccer Field. The Hilltoppers defeated the Rattlers, 5-1 in San Antonio earlier this season.
