Number 22 St. Edward's finally breaks through in OT, downs Newman, 1-0

The 2008-2009 Men's Soccer Team
Box Score AUSTIN, Texas - After taking 30 shots and coming up empty, number 31 did the trick as junior Ezual Lewis scored in the 97 thminute to give St. Edward's an exciting 1-0 victory over Newman Sunday afternoon at the SEU Soccer Field.

In 97 thminute, Newman (3-4-1, 2-1-1 HC) drew a free kick deep in the Hilltopper end of the field. Sophomore goalkeeper Matt Moore came off his line to cut off the cross. He quickly threw the ball ahead to a streaking Kevin Klaus. Klaus found Lewis behind the defenders on the counter-attack. Lewis beat the goalkeeper fro the "Golden Goal". Klaus and Moore both received assists on the winning goal.

"I didn't think I got a good shot off on the last one, but it was good enough to give us the victory," Lewis said. "This was a total team effort today and I am glad we got the win. The sky is the limit for this team; we just have to continue to work hard."

St. Edward's (6-0, 2-0 HC) peppered the goal in the first half, registering 13 shots in the opening 45 minutes. The Hilltoppers also put seven of those shots on goal but Newman goalkeeper Emmanuel Gutierrez was equal to the task stopping all seven of them. St. Edward's only allowed one shot by the Jets.

In the second half, St. Edward's again poured shots onto goal, tallying 14 shots, but Gutierrez kept the Hilltoppers at bay with some key saves.

"Their goalkeeper made some very good saves with all the shots we had on goal," head coach Brian Young said. "We had some excellent opportunities inside the six-yard box that we didn't capitalize on. We will improve on that going into this coming weekend."

In the last three minutes of regulation, Newman finally had their shot at an eventual game-winner. Marshall Johnson had a wide-open look in front of the goal but sent his strike just over the crossbar. Brian Alvarez had an opportunity with 30 seconds left in regulation but pushed his shot wide.

Moore and the rest of the Hilltopper defense produced their fifth-straight shutout. Moore notched three saves on the day and now has a 0.18 goals-against average.

St. Edward's outshot the Jets, 31-6, and put 15 shots goal. They also had 10 cornerkicks compared to just three by Newman.

St. Edward's will be back in action next weekend when they travel to Denver, Colo. for two matches. St. Edward's will take on Colorado-Mines on Friday at 7 p.m. They will also play #7 Fort Lewis Sunday at 10 a.m. Both games will be broadcasted live on Hilltopper website.
