Box Score ARVADA, Colo. - Sophomore Trey Perkins' game-winning goal in double overtime gave #18 St. Edward's a 2-1 victory over Colorado School of Mines Friday evening at Long Lake Ranch Park.
After a scoreless first half, Colorado School of Mines (3-3-2) opened the scoring in the 47 thminute when Cameron Brown corralled a loose ball in the box and put it past Hilltopper goalkeeper Matt Moore for the first score of the match.
St. Edward's (7-0) had many opportunities down the stretch but struggled to find the net. Finally in the 80 thminute, junior Josh Nannen scored the equalizing goal on a loose ball in the box. Neither team could score in regulation and the match headed to overtime.
In the first overtime period, St. Edward's outshot the Orediggers, 3-1. In the second overtime, sophomore Sean Meller played a through ball to Kevin Klaus into the box. Klaus cut the ball back to the penalty kick area to Perkins and the Keller, Texas native notched the "Golden Goal". This is the second-straight match the Hilltoppers have won in overtime. They defeated Newman, 1-0, on Sunday.
"I think Colorado School of Mines is a very good team," Lewis said. "Matt Moore made a couple of key saves for us that gave us a chance to win. I felt our players had a lot of confidence that they were going to come back and win. I was proud of the way they fought and they did it against a very good team."
St. Edward's outshot Colorado School of Mines, 22-15, and had 10 cornerkicks compared to just four for the Orediggers. St. Edward's will be back in action Sunday when they take on #7 Fort Lewis at 10 a.m. MST. The match will be broadcasted live on the Hilltopper website.
