Box Score WICHITA, Kan. - Senior Scott Strickland sent a penalty kick past the opposing goalkeeper to give St. Edward's a 1-0 victory over Newman Sunday afternoon at Wilkins Field.
Both teams had numerous chances in regulation with Newman (2-8-2, 1-3 HC) sending six shots on goal while St. Edward's (2-6-2, 2-1 HC) had six shots on goal. Junior Matt Moore turned away all seven of those shots, while Steven Williams was equal to the task for the Jets.
In overtime, Newman had the first scoring opportunity when Joe Gerant sent a header towards the Hilltopper net but Moore, again, prevented the Jets from scoring.
Then in the 95th minute, senior Ezual Lewis was taken down in the box by a Jet defender, which set up a penalty kick. Strickland, a Dallas, Texas native, calmly stepped up and put it into the back of the net for his second penalty kick goal in as many matches.
St. Edward's has now won two-straight matches and looks to keep its hot streak going back at home.
The Hilltoppers will return home on Friday to host long-time rival St. Mary's. Kick-off is set for 4 p.m. at the SEU Soccer Field.
