McLaughlin goal completes comeback; Hilltoppers defeat St. Mary's, 3-2

Box Score SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Matt McLaughlin's game-winning goal in the 87 thminute propelled the St. Edward's men's soccer team past St. Mary's, 3-2, on Friday afternoon at STMU Soccer Field. St. Mary's (3-11, 1-6 HC) opened the scoring in the 14 thminute when David Anthony Oliver beat Hilltopper goalkeeper Matt Moore (Senior, Arlington, Texas) on a one-on-one. Sean Strater picked up the assist with a through-ball pass.

The Rattlers added to their lead in the 32 ndminute when Anthony Bustos scored the second goal of the match. Oliver assisted on the play. St. Edward's (9-4-2, 5-1 HC) came right back just one minute later when Daniel Riley (Freshman, Keighley, England) knocked in a rebound in the 33 rdminute.

Joeski Williams (Senior, St. Paul, St. Kitts) assisted on the play. That is the way the first half would end with the Rattlers outshooting the Hilltoppers 6-5. In the second half, the Hilltoppers scored a goal in the 82 ndminute to knot the score, 2-2. Daniel Pena (Freshman, Plano, Texas) scored his first goal of the season with an assist by Trey Perkins (Senior, Keller, Texas). The ball was shot from 30 yards out and went far post.

The Hilltoppers scored the final goal of the match to take home the victory in the 87 thminute. Matt McLaughlin (Freshman, Allen, Texas)picked up a loose ball from a Hilltopper free kick and connected the ball with the back of the net, bringing the score up to 3-2.

Head coach Brian Young said, "Our team did a good job in the first half. At halftime we made some adjustments and went back out and dominated in the second half. The players who made the goals today worked hard and deserved it. I am very proud of our effort today."

St. Edward's will be back in action Sunday when they face off against Texas A&M-International. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at the TAMU-International Soccer Field.
