Box Score PORTALES, N.M. - The St. Edward's men's soccer team scored three goals in the second half for a 3-1 comeback victory over #17 Eastern New Mexico Sunday afternoon at the ENMU Soccer Field.
In the first half, both teams had their chances early. The two teams combined for 15 fouls and five yellow cards. In the 38th minute, Daniel Riley (Freshman, Keighley, England) had his far-post header hit off of the post. Trey Perkins (Senior, Keller, Texas) followed with a header that was saved by Eastern New Mexico goalkeeper Chris Sheridan.
He couldn't handle it and Riley had another shot at goal but his strike went wide. In the 42nd minute, Eastern New Mexico (7-1-1) got on the scoreboard first. Kal Herbert took a through ball from Andy Wilkinson and beat Hilltopper goalkeeper Matt Moore by banking it off of the far post for a 1-0 lead. That is how the half would end, with the Greyhounds outshooting the Hilltoppers, 6-4.
In the second half, the Hilltoppers came out on fire. In the 67th minute, Alex Weaver (Freshman, Johnson City, Tenn.) came off of the bench and quickly created for St. Edward's. He received a through-ball from Joeski Williams (Senior, St. Paul, St. Kitts) and beat the keeper near post to knot the score, 1-1.
In the 72nd minute, Williams had an opportunity to put the Hilltoppers ahead with a penalty kick. He had the keeper guessing the wrong way, but his shot went wide left. Williams made up for it in the 82nd minute when he took a cross from Riley and deposited it into the back of the net for a 2-1 St. Edward's lead.
The Hilltoppers put the game out of reach in the 88th minute when Riley again assisted on a goal when he found Perkins streaking ahead behind the defense. Perkins beat the keeper one-on-one.
"It was great to see our team respond to being behind," head coach
Brian Young said. "In the second half we attacked and created a lot more opportunities to score. I have a lot of confidence in our guys and their confidence seems to be growing as well." This was the first time for St. Edward's to defeat a nationally-ranked opponent since 2008, when the Hilltoppers opened the season with a 4-1 victory over then #21 Regis.
St. Edward's will be back in action Friday when they host Heartland Conference foe Newman. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. at the SEU Soccer Field.
