Hilltoppers fall to number 2 Midwestern State, 6-1

Box Score WICHITA FALLS, Texas - The St. Edward's men's soccer team lost a 6-1 decision to #2 Midwestern State Sunday afternoon at the MSU Soccer Field.

Midwestern State (5-0) jumped to an early lead in the seventh minute of the game when Ryan Spence scored on a header assisted by Bryce Taylor and Paulo Teixeira. St. Edward's (3-2) looked to respond in the 18th minute with a corner kick by Daniel Riley (Freshman, Keighley, England) to Joeski Williams (Senior, St. Paul, St. Kitts) but his header was saved by Mustang goalkeeper Raul Herrera.

Midwestern State took advantage of one of its four cornerkicks for the match, scoring in the 26th minute. Nathan Fitzgerald was credited with the goal, assisted by Sam Broadbent. Midwestern State continued to challenge the Hilltoppers defense and eventually scored the final goal of the first half in the 41st minute.

The Mustangs came out in the second half scoring in the 55th minute with St. Edward's quickly responding. Getting his fourth goal of the season, Williams scored in the 63rd minute to bring the match to 4-1. In the 80th minute of the game, Hilltopper goalkeeper Matt Moore (Senior, Arlington, Texas) came up with a save but was soon tested again by Midwestern State Chad Caldwell who eventually scored his first goal of the season.

In the final minutes of the game, the Mustangs had a corner kick that rebounded off the keeper, Moore, and was shot by VcMor Ellgwe giving him his second goal on the year.

"Midwestern is a very good team," head coach Brian Young said. "We are looking forward to getting back to training. After five road matches in a row the players are excited for our home opener verses St. Mary's and having our fans behind us."

St. Edward's will have its first home game of the year against St. Mary's on Friday. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. at the SEU Soccer Field.
