Box Score AUSTIN, Texas – The St. Edward's volleyball team had payback on its mind Wednesday evening as they took on Dallas Baptist at the Recreation and Convocation Center. The Hilltoppers avenged an early-season loss to Dallas Baptist by sweeping the Patriots, 25-14, 25-17, 25-17.
St. Edward's (12-6, 7-3 HC) raced out to a quick 5-1 lead in the opening set, with
MEREDITH BARD leading the way with two kills. Sparked by two service aces, along with two kills by Mary Kohler, the Hilltoppers extended their lead to 15-6, forcing Dallas Baptist (13-7, 7-3 HC) to call a timeout. Kohler would finish the first set with five kills to help St. Edward's to an easy 25-14 triumph.
MICHELLE HUNDT notched 11 digs during the set that forced Dallas Baptist into a -.056 hitting percentage.
In the second set, both teams traded points to tie the score, 6-6. St. Edwards would win nine of the next 13 points to take control of the set, 15-10, and force the Patriots into yet another timeout.
COURTNEY TREVINO had the hot hand as she tallied three kills during the deciding stanza. Trevino would end up with six kills during set two, as the Hilltoppers coasted to a 25-17 victory.
In the final set, St. Edward's controlled things from the start. It was Bard's turn to lead the squad as she pounded out six kills during the set.
ELISSA STANTON added two service aces for good measure.
Kohler finished with a team-high 12 kills, while Trevino finished with 10 of her own.
MARY MCNAMARA and
LOREN KELLY dished out 19 and 18 assists, respectively. Hundt led all players with 22 digs. Both Kelly and Stanton had three service aces. As a team, St. Edward's hit a season-high .349, while holding Dallas Baptist to a .143 hitting percentage.
The Hilltoppers will be back in action Friday when they travel to take on Tarleton State. First serve is set for 6 p.m. in Stephenville, Texas.
