AUSTIN, Texas – The St. Edward's men's soccer team defeated McMurry 2-1 on Thursday afternoon. The Hilltoppers are now 9-3-2 on the season and have gone the past nine games without a loss.
St. Edward's came out on top in a match featuring 20 fouls and six yellow cards. The Hilltoppers got off to a quick start by scoring in the game's 13
th minute.
KYLE PUJATS connected from 10 yards out off an assist from
KARL DEZOETEN. McMurry would answer with their own goal just four minutes later. James Ness gathered a shot off the post from
Ryan Prince to beat St. Edward's goalkeeper
JOHN KASCHAK and tie the game at 1-1.
In the 20
th minute, Gustavo Mendoza of McMurry was called for his second yellow card and was ejected from the match. With McMurry down a man, St. Edward's took advantage in the 32
nd minute when
ANDERSON MCDANIEL scored off an assist by
DANIEL RILEY to give the Hilltoppers a 2-1 lead. McDaniel beat McMurry's goalkeeper
Neil O'Sullivan to score his third goal of the year.
In the second half, the defensive play picked up for both teams. Each goalkeeper made two saves in the half. Things got physical starting in the 68
th minute when yellow cards were issued to McMurry's Tyler Tarango and to St. Edward's
DANIEL RILEY.
MATT MCLAUGHLIN and
KESTON SMITH of the Hilltoppers were whistled for each issued yellow cards in the closing minutes.
“It was a battle today and I was very proud of how the team responded to win on the road again,” said Coach Young. “We need to tighten up on the ways we have allowed our last two goals in training this week. We are looking forward to finishing the regular season with four home games.
St. Edward's will be back in action on Thursday when they host St. Mary's in another session of the Battle of the Saints. Action will begin at 3:30.
