DALLAS, Texas – The St. Edward's volleyball team suffered its first conference loss Tuesday night as they lost to Dallas Baptist in four sets 19-25, 23-25, 25-23, and 15-25 at the Burg Center.
St. Edward's (4-3, 2-1 HC) jumped on the board early in the first set with a kill by
COURTNEY TREVINO (Austin, Texas/Lamar) before Dallas Baptist (5-3, 3-0 HC) would respond with a four-point run to give them a lead, 4-1. The Hilltoppers kept the Patriots within reach tying the set four more times before Dallas Baptist regained control of the set. Tied for the final time at 9-9, the Patriots kept to short rallies that added to their lead with St. Edward's unable to answer back as Dallas Baptist used the lead to take the set, 25-19.
In the second set, the Hilltoppers found themselves working from behind again. Down in the set, 7-2, another kill by Trevino and two service aces by
LOREN KELLY (Rockwall, Texas/Rockwall HS) sparked a four-point rally to put St. Edward's within one, 7-6. The two teams continued to battle back-and-forth trading leads. With the Patriots up, 17-13, Trevino and Kelly aided another run for the Hilltoppers to even the score at 18-18. The teams tied the set for the final time at 23-23, but Dallas Baptist was able to capitalize on two St. Edward's errors to win the set, 25-23.
In a must win set, the Hilltoppers looked to take an early lead to keep the match alive. Holding off the Patriots from any long rallies, St. Edward's maintained the lead for much of the early part of the set. Up by one, 13-12, a kill by Hilltopper
MARY KOEHLER (Highland Village, Texas/FM Marcus HS) sparked an 11-4 run with the help of Trevino and
MEREDITH BARD (El Campo, Texas/El Campo HS) that put St. Edward's at set point, 24-16. Dallas Baptist would not go down without a fight coming up with seven unanswered points bringing them within one, 24-23. The Hilltoppers were able capitalize on a Patriot error winning, 25-23.
Dallas Baptist answered in the fourth set taking the first five points. St. Edward's hoped to chip away at the lead but the Patriots kept the Hilltoppers to short rallies to maintain their lead. St. Edward's was unable to come within reach as Dallas Baptist went on to win the set, 25-15.
For the Hilltoppers Koehler picked up another double-double tallying 11 kills and 11 digs. Trevino added to the offense with 16 kills of her own as Kelly accounted for 23 assists and three service aces.
Leading the Patriots was Kristin Secord with 16 kills and Erika Papadeas and Tadam Mergener with 13 kills each.
St. Edward's will be back in action Saturday when they travel to Canyon, Texas to take on SW Oklahoma State at 11 a.m. and West Texas A&M at 7 p.m.
