Hilltoppers fall to #1 Fort Lewis behind two second half goals

GOLDEN, Colo. – St. Edward's hung in tough against the top ranked team in Division II in its match on Sunday morning, but the Sky Hawks of Fort Lewis College came away with the 2-0 victory behind two second-half goals. The Hilltoppers now sit at 0-2 on the year.

The first half ended in a 0-0 tie thanks to St. Edward's goalkeeper JOHN KASCHAK. Fort Lewis registered four shots on goal in the first half, but Kaschak was there for three saves while the other was blocked. The Hilltoppers registered just one shot in the first half. Junior forward ANDERSON MCDANIEL in the 20th minute that was blocked by the Sky Hawks defense.

The end of the first half featured several yellow cards called against Fort Lewis. Three yellow cards were called against Fort Lewis in a span of less than two minutes. The cards were given to Kosta Kordistos, Yannis Becker, and one card was issued to the Fort Lewis bench.

St. Edward's got off to a better start offensively in the second half. The Hilltoppers took two shots in the 62nd minute. The first shot taken by ANDREW FOX was saved by Fort Lewis goalkeeper Ryan Schaul. DANIEL RILEY had a follow-up chance sail high.  

After missed opportunities by the Hilltoppers, Fort Lewis would take control of the game in the second half. The Sky Hawks took eight shots in the half, including four on goal. In the 68th minute, Fort Lewis broke the tie with a header to the right side of the net by Casey Dean off a cross by Aaron Kloer.

Fort Lewis would keep the pressure on, but St. Edward's goalkeeper Kaschak was there for three more saves, giving him six for the game.

In the 88th minute, Fort Lewis would make it 2-0 off a goal by Kordistos from the top of the box.  Kordistos sent the ball to the bottom right corner of the goal off an assist by Derek Freeman. 

St. Edward's last chance for a goal came in the game's final minute when McDaniel's shot saved by Fort Lewis goalkeeper Schaul. Overall, Fort Lewis outshot the Hilltoppers 16 to 5. St. Edward's was held without a cornerkick while Fort Lewis had 9. The Hilltoppers were whistled for 15 fouls in the game, including 12 in the second half.

"Fort Lewis is a good team and we will learn defensively from their first goal," head coach Brian Young said. "We pushed for the game-tying goal and created three great scoring chances that were blocked by the defenders inside the 18-yard box in the second half. The guys know what we need to work on, but they are a hard-working group and the staff and players will turn the results around."

St. Edward's will be back in action on September 13 when they travel to Dallas to take on Dallas Baptist. The Hilltoppers' first home match will be on September 16 against Midwestern State.
