Hilltoppers rebound with a 3-0 sweep of Newman

Box Score AUSTIN, Texas – The St. Edward's volleyball team used a balanced attack and great defense to snap a two-match losing streak with a 3-0 victory over Newman Saturday afternoon at the Recreation and Convocation Center. The Hilltoppers won, 25-14, 26-24, 25-6, over the Jets.

St. Edward's (6-5, 3-2 HC) opened the first set on an 8-3 run keyed by two service errors and three attack errors by Newman (3-7, 1-2 HC). The Hilltoppers would extend its lead out to 21-10 and never look back, taking the first set, 25-14.

In the second set, the Jets stepped up their play, and were tied 7-7. Two kills by HANNAH RAUCH pushed the Hilltoppers to a 9-5 run to give St. Edward's a 16-12 lead. Newman would fight back, using a 6-2 run to knot the score, 18-18. With the score tied, 24-24, ALETRA WARE would come up with a huge kill for the Hilltoppers. She would give St. Edward's the set when she combined with COURTNEY TREVINO  for a block assist.

In the third set, it was all Hilltoppers. St. Edward's raced out to a 10-3 lead. They would go on to rout the Jets as they hit .474 as a team, while holding the Jets to a -.214 hitting clip.

Trevino would lead the Hilltoppers with seven kills, while Ware and Rauch chipped in with six kills each. MARY MCNAMARA finished with 14 assists, while LOREN KELLY  chipped in with 10 of her own. MICHELLE HUNDT led St. Edward's with 19 digs.

Gabby Loxterman led the Jets, as she finished with a double-double, dishing out 19 assists and coming up with 10 digs.

The Hilltoppers will be back in action Thursday when they travel to take on Heartland Conference newcomer, McMurry. First serve is set for 7 p.m. in Abilene, Texas. Live coverage will be available on the War Hawk Athletic Website.
