AUSTIN, Texas – The St. Edward's will look to carry the momentum from a four-game winning streak into the spring portion of the 2012-13 schedule that begins this Saturday at the Recreation and Convocation Center when it takes on McMurry. Leading the way will be
SHIMEEK JOHNSON, the newest member of the St. Edward's 1000-point club.
St. Edward's (10-6) has won four in a row and six of its past seven games. They got hot during a four-game road trip to Hawaii, where the Hilltoppers opened with a 59-50 victory over previously unbeaten #10 Northwest Missouri State. St. Edward's would follow that with a revenge victory over Harding the next afternoon as Johnson scored 22 points to lead the way and also etch his name in the Hilltopper 1,000-point club. Johnson is the 26
th member of the club and has already moved up to 23
rd on the list. St. Edward's closed out the Hawaii trip with a win over SUNY Oneonta and victory over Hawaii-Hilo on its home court.
After its two Heartland Conference games in December, St. Edward's is 0-2 in league play, along with three teams at 0-1 (Panhandle State, Texas A&M-International and UT-Permian Basin). Dallas Baptist sits in the top spot at 2-0, with Newman, UA Fort Smith, and St. Mary's at 1-0 in conference play.
The next three games on the schedule for the Hilltoppers are as follows: Non-conference games against conference opponents McMurry (7-2) and Oklahoma Christian (7-4), sandwiched around a matchup against the conference-leading Patriots of Dallas Baptist (5-5, 2-0 HC). All three games will be at home as the Hilltoppers look to get back on track in conference play.
Saturday's game against Heartland Conference newcomer McMurry will not be a conference game as the Warhawks are in their transition stage to NCAA Division II and are not eligible for the Heartland Conference crown. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m. at the Recreation and Convocation Center. Live video and stats will be available on the Hilltopper Athletic Website.
