Box Score AUSTIN, Texas – The St. Edward's men's soccer team saw its win streak come to a standstill on a beautiful sunny Saturday afternoon at Lewis-Chen Family Field. The Hilltoppers dropped a 2-1 non-conference decision to Midwestern State and now sit at 8-2-1 for the season.
Midwestern State started the game on a rapid pace. Len Smith had his first opportunity to score just five minutes into the match, but St. Edward's goalkeeper
JOHN KASCHAK was in place for the save.
St. Edward's had their chance for the first goal of the game just minutes later with shots by
JACK BLANTON and
DANIEL RILEY. Blanton's shot sailed over the goal while the Mustang goalkeeper Nick Petolick saved Riley's shot.
The Hilltoppers continued to take shots on goal, but had trouble finding the back of the net. During the 25
th minute
, JOSH TAYLOR had his shot go wide right, and Riley had another opportunity but it drifted above the goal.
In the 40
th minute of action,
JACK BLANTON was brought down while in the box and was awarded with a penalty kick. Blanton fired the ball down the middle and scored the goal to give the Hilltoppers the 1-0 lead. This was Blanton's second goal of the season. St. Edward's went into halftime leading 1-0.
Midwestern State responded with a goal less than two minutes into the second period. Ben Clarvis scored his first goal of the season after
JOHN KASCHAK tried to make a heroic save and was out of position. Initially Kaschak had gotten his hands on the ball but the rebound fell on the Clarvis's foot and he drove it to the back of the net for the equalizer.
The Mustangs leading scorer Len Smith added his seventh goal of the season at a crucial moment in the game. He scored off a cross from teammate Idrissa Camara and scored the second goal of the game for Midwestern State. The Mustangs were now in the drivers seat with a 2-1 lead with 18 minutes remaining.
DANIEL RILEY had his best opportunity to tie the game at the 79
th minute when he received the ball in the box and took a shot, but was denied by the Mustang keeper. Riley had another opportunity just seconds later, but his header went over the goal. The Hilltoppers didn't generate another opportunity and lost their first game since the opening weekend.
Head coach
Brian Young commented after the game, "We had ample chances to score goals in the first half and again in the second. Danny Riley had the best chance with minutes remaining in the second half that was saved off the line by their keeper."
Young concluded, "We will keep doing what has won us games this year and look forward to our Heartland Conference match against McMurry on Monday."
The Hilltoppers will be back in action on Monday, for conference matchup against McMurry. St. Edward's defeated the Warhawks in dominating fashion 7-0 earlier this season.
