WICHITA, Kan. – The St. Edward's Volleyball team picked up their fifth-consecutive conference victory with a win over Newman, 3-1. The Hilltoppers improve to 11-14 overall and 9-5 in Heartland Conference play.
The first set opened with competitive play from both squads. St. Edward's saw the second biggest lead for either team, leading 12-9 behind back-to-back points from ELISSA STANTON. Newman went on a run and tied the set, 16-16. The Hilltoppers' lead grew to four points, but Newman would go on to win six-straight points to take the first set, 26-24.
JACLYN BILLIE had the hot hand midway through the second set, registering three straight points helping St. Edward's grow their lead to 17-13. Newman clawed back into the set tying it, 22-22. The remainder of the second set was back-and-forth until a service error and an attack error by the Jets gave the Hilltoppers the 26-24 victory. The teams were tied at one set apiece.
St. Edward's got off to a slow start during the third set. After falling behind 12-5, they fought back to take the lead, 13-12. The Hilltoppers led 20-17 after two attack errors by the Jets. Newman scored three-straight points and tied the set, 23-23, but KARINA GONZALEZ registered a kill and the Jets committed an attack error. St. Edward's won the set 25-23 and was now up 2-1 overall.
The Hilltoppers filled the stat sheet with a flurry of kills during the fourth set. St. Edward's grew an early lead, 14-8. The Jets committed several errors and the Hilltoppers took advantage increasing their lead to 19-11. St. Edward's would eventually close out the set with five-straight points to win the set, 25-14, and the match 3-1.
The Hilltoppers will be back in action on Thursday when they return home for a conference matchup against conference-leader UA Fort Smith. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m. at the Recreation and Convocation Center (RCC) on the St. Edward's campus. Live video and stats will be available through the Hilltopper athletic website.
