Box Score AUSTIN, Texas. – The St. Edward's women's soccer team defeated Newman 8-0 in the first round of the Heartland Conference Tournament on a chilly Saturday afternoon at Lewis-Chen Family Field.
KELLY DAVIS and
LAUREN HELLER each scored two goals in the match. St. Edward's improves to 15-0-2 on the season.
The Hilltoppers outshot the Jets 17-1 in the first half.
MEGAN ANDERSON put St. Edward's up 1-0 just two minutes into the match. Anderson received a cross through the box from
CAILYN TRAPANI and sent the ball in from 10 yards out. This was Anderson's ninth goal of the season.
LAUREN HELLER made it 2-0 in the 19
th minute off the second assist by Trapani. Trapani crossed the ball through the box to Heller who put the ball past Newman goalkeeper Haley Borchers. This was Heller's eighth goal of the year.
Davis scored the first of her two goals in the 32
nd minute off a cornerkick from
KATIE DONAHUE to push the lead to 3-0. Davis met the ball in the air and headed it into the net through the crowd of players. She had just entered the match right before the conrnerkick.
RIANA SOOBADOO scored her second goal of the year in the 41
st minute to make it 4-0. Soobadoo scored the loose ball after the Newman goalkeeper tried to corral a cross from Davis. Davis was credited for her third assist of the year.
MIKAYLA ENGEL made it 5-0 less than a minute later in action. Engel received a pass through the defense by
JESSICA TRAVES and beat the keeper one-one-one for her fifth goal of the year. St. Edward's led 5-0 at halftime.
Both teams replaced goalkeepers in the second half with
LORRIE SANTOY entering for St. Edward's and Kayleigh Renfro for Newman. Heller put the Hilltoppers up 6-0 in the 56
th minute when she flicked the ball past the keeper from six yards out. Heller was assisted by Anderson and
AMBER GUENTHER. Heller and Anderson are tied for the team lead with nine goals.
Davis scored her second goal of the match and of the season in the 73
rd minute to make it 7-0.
ZOE ANSELL passed the ball through the defense to Davis who sent it to the far post.
JESSICA TRAVES made it 8-0 in the 89
th minute off an assist from Engel. Traves received the cross from Engel at the penalty spot and beat the keeper to the near post. This was Traves' second goal and Engel's third assist of the year.
St. Edward's outshot Newman, 26-1 for the match with a 14-1 advantage in terms of shots on goal. The Hilltoppers also had the advantage in cornerkicks, 12-0.
The Hilltoppers will be back in action Saturday versus Dallas Baptist in the Heartland Conference Tournament Championship. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Lewis-Chen Family Field. The Hilltoppers won both matches against Dallas Baptist this season.
