Hilltoppers finish second at Heartland Conference Tournament

The Basics
-Scores: Dallas Baptist 596 (1st place), St. Edward's 611 (2nd place), Newman 614 (3rd place), St. Mary's 663 (4th place), Arkansas Fort-Smith 680 (5th place).

How it Happened
-St. Edward's trailed Dallas Baptist by just two strokes for first place entering day two of the Heartland Conference Tournament, but the Hilltoppers could not make up the difference and finished in second place. The Hilltoppers shot a round of 312 today to add to yesterday's round 299 for a total of 611. Dallas Baptist shot a round of 299 today and finished with a total of 596.
Rounding out the top five were Newman (614), St. Mary's (663), and Arkansas Fort-Smith (680).
-Individually, MELISA GONZALEZ finished second overall with a total of 144. Gonzalez shot a 75 after yesterday's round of 69.
-RYANNE HADDOW shot a round of 80 today and finished in seventh place with a total of 153.
-HALEY HAUGHT tied for ninth place with a total of 157. Haught shot a 79 after yesterday's round of 78.
-WALLIS SPEARS was the only player to improve her score on day two. Spears improved by four strokes today for a round of 78 and a total 160.
-TAYLOR MORENO shot a round of 89 today and finished tied for 15th place with a total of 168.
 
Beyond the Box Score
-The Hilltoppers placed three players inside the top ten and all five Hilltoppers placed inside the top 15.
-Gonzalez finished just one stroke shy of Mercedes Rios of Dallas Baptist for first place overall.
Gonzalez was named to the All-Tournament Team. For the tournament, Gonzalez hit one eagle and seven birdies. Gonzalez and Rios were tied for the lead after 15 holes of play. Gonzalez would bogey both 16 and 17, and Rios only tallied one bogey on 18 to hang for the individual title. Gonzalez was the Heartland Conference Tournament medalist her sophomore season in 2011.

Up Next
Despite not wrapping up the Heartland Conference, St. Edward's will more than likely move on to play in the NCAA Super Regional being held in Grand Junction, Colo. from May 5-7. The Hilltoppers are ranked second nationally and first in the West Region.
