DENVER, Colo. – The St. Edward's Women's Soccer team tied Metro State, 1-1 Friday morning in a match that was pushed forward to 9 a.m. MST due to weather in the area. The Hilltoppers were down 1-0 with under a minute to play in regulation when VALENCIA MOBLEY came through with a key goal to force overtime. The game ended in a tie after neither team could score in the two overtime periods. St. Edward's is now 2-0-1 on the year.
The game was really a tale of two halves, with the first half belonging to the Roadrunners of Metro State. The Roadrunners outshot the Hilltoppers, 8-5, in the period. In the 12th minute of action, St. Edward's goalkeeper DANIELLE LICARIONE made a save on a shot attempt by Metro State's Brandi Farley. Just seconds later, Farley received a cornerkick from Abby Rolph and scored on an attempt from inside the box.
St. Edward's had several chances in the middle of the first half. Metro State's goalkeeper Nicole Jablonski saved MEGAN ANDERSON's header attempt in the 26th minute. Anderson had a shot in the 28th minute go wide right. The half ended with Metro State up 1-0.
In the second half, the Hilltoppers outshot the Roadrunners, 13-2. St. Edward's AMBER GUENTHER and ANNA OWEN each had shots go wide in the 55th minute. Guenther had a shot go off the post in the 60th minute.
In the 88th minute, CAILYN TRAPANI's shot was blocked by the Roadrunner defense. KATIE DONAHUE sent the ensuing cornerkick to RACHEL MURRAY for a header attempt that was saved by Jablonski. With under a minute remaining, in regulation, Mobley received a header flick from Murray off of a long throw in by MIKAYLA ENGEL, and she beat the keeper from inside the box.
In the first overtime session, freshman goalkeeper LORRIE SANTOY made a save on an attempt by Rolph. In the second overtime session, the Hilltoppers had three shot attempts. Metro State keeper Jablonski saved Anderson's shot in the 105th minute. Anderson led St. Edward's with nine attempts. JESSICA TRAVES had the final chance for a goal in the 109th minute, but her shot was saved by Jablonski. Jablonski finished with six saves.
After the game, VALENCIA MOBLEY was proud of the team's effort. "We all fought really hard as a team and we showed a lot of character," said Mobley. "We tried to get the win, but unfortunately that didn't happen. But, a tie is better than a loss."
