St. Edward’s holds off Newman to win first event of season

SAN ANGELO, Texas – The sixth ranked St. Edward's women's golf team secured its first victory of the 2013 season by raising the trophy in the Concho River Classic at Bentwood Country Club. The Hilltoppers edged out Heartland Conference foe, Newman by two strokes to secure the victory.
 
RYANNE HADDOW continued her consistent play, posting her second score of 73 for the tournament. She finished tied for fifth place with Isabel Jimenez Perea of Tarleton State.
 
MARISSA BRANSBURG posted a final round score of 76, for a two round total of 148 (72–76=148). Bransburg finished the tournament in a tie for seventh place.
 
HALEY HAUGHT was the third golfer to finish inside the top-10 individually. Haught matched her teammates score, Haddow, with a 73, and finished tied for ninth place.
 
TAYLOR MORENO finished just outside the top-15 posting a score of 74. She finished the tournament tied for 16th shooting (78–74=152). ALYSSA SMITH finished her final round shooting an 80 and finishing 29th overall.
 
Haddow finished the day tied for second in par-4 scoring with a 4.05 scoring average on the tournament. Haddow and Moreno parred 26 of 36 holes for the tournament. Haught parred 23.
 
As a team, the Hilltoppers finished in top three in par-3, par-4, and par-5 scoring. St. Edward's led the tournament with 114 pars, and accounted for 16 birdies.
 
Head Coach Jennifer McNeil commented on her team's first win of the season, "Today was a total team effort and I'm pleased with how well we played. It feels great to start out the season with a win."
 
The Hilltoppers will be back in action Sept. 30-Oct. 1, to compete in The Challenge at Onion Creek in Austin, Texas hosted by Texas State. The par-70, 6,350-yard course is located in South Austin. St. Edward's will look to capture its sixth-consecutive fall tournament victory dating back to the start of last season.
