Box Score AUSTIN, Texas – The St. Edward's Women's Soccer team started the 2013 season by beating Southern Nazarene, 6-0. Junior
CAILYN TRAPANI was the star of the game, notching a hat-trick in her first game back from an injury that caused her to miss the entire the 2012 season.
In the first half, the Hilltoppers defense set the tone. The ball was rarely on the defensive side of the field. Goalkeeper
DANIELLE LICARIONE was tested just once when Southern Nazarene's Mallary Schaub's shot in the 40
th minute sailed high. On the offensive side, St. Edward's had difficulty capitalizing on opportunities. The Hilltoppers managed nine shots in the half, but came away with just one goal in the first 45 minutes. The lone goal came in the 13
th minute of action when Freshman Alex Bsaibes sent the ball over the keeper off a cross from
LAUREN HELLER.
In the second half, the St. Edward's offense exploded for five goals. Sophomore
VALENCIA MOBLEY scored in the opening minute of the half when she launched a shot over the keeper from about 30 yards out.
The first of Trapani's three goals came in the 54
th minute. Trapani beat the keeper to left side of the goal off another assist from Heller. Trapani's second goal came off a cross from
RACHEL MURRAY in the 60
th minute. Trapani's third goal came in the 77
th minute when she beat the keeper from 20 yards out.
MIKAYLA ENGEL, last season's leading scorer, notched the team's final goal in the 82
nd minute. Engel beat the keeper high off a rebound. Assists were awarded to Bsaibes and
JESSICA WILLIAMSON.
St. Edward's had valuable contributions from several of the team's newcomers. Transfers
AMBER GUENTHER and
KATIE DONAHUE each started and made their presence felt. Freshman goalkeeper
LORRIE SANTOY replaced Licarione in the second half and kept up the shutout.
The Hilltoppers return to action on Sunday when they take on Texas Woman's University.
