AUSTIN, Texas – The 23
rd-ranked Men's Soccer team put on a very impressive offensive display in the first half of Saturday's Heartland Conference match up as they defeated the Newman Jets, 4-0.
The Hilltoppers (8-2-1, 3-0 HC) started the scoring early as
DANIEL RILEY connected on a service from
JOSH TAYLOR's free kick. Taylor found Riley streaking across the defense and Riley's header found the left post, but the ball trickled across the line to give St. Edward's a 1-0 advantage.
Newman (7-4-1, HC 1-2) was caught off guard in the 22
nd minute as St. Edward's attempt to clear the ball from their side of the field turned into a scoring opportunity.
KYLE RUCK flicked on the clearance past the Newman defense and Riley found his way to the ball. He beat the Jet keeper one-on-one to give the Hilltoppers a 2-0 edge.
St. Edward's third goal came in the 30
th minute via their team captains finding one another.
ANDREW FOX won the ball in the box, in the air, and sent it in the direction of
COLETON STYMIEST who finished the opportunity from five yards out.
SAMUEL JACKSON capped the scoring for the Hilltoppers in the 39
th minute as he converted on Primo Covarrubias' cornerkick. The ball made it through a sea of Jets and Hilltoppers before Jackson tipped it in.
St. Edward's defense looked very strong as they only gave up three shots on goal to a Newman Jets squad that averaged three goals per game prior to the match. The Hilltoppers will face Rogers State this Monday. Kick-off for Monday's tilt will start at 2:30 pm from Lewis-Chen Family Field.
